One thing after another!

  Mental 172 Cup
When I first got my 182 a year ago now it was mint and a big step up from a 1.2. Ever since ive lowered it I get it looking mint and then something goes wrong and it demotivates me from doing anything and just wants me to sell!!

Started with a knackered wheel bearing and a knock when turning left and accelerating which turned out to be a knackered driveshaft! when changing the wheel bearing the hub snapped in the press and I had to then get a new hub! :(

I sorted that out and was out with mates and some chavs threw a bottle which dented my car on the door at the top of the door just above the window! I have got one quote of £150 plus VAT to fix this little dent and have been told it is hard to blend LY because of the 3stage pearl! :(

Then one morning on way into work got a bit to close when parking to a kerb and managed to knock my splitter into 6pieces :( rang renault and £155 for a new one! :nono:

Then I picked the missus up from work and heard a knocking on overrun so I left it as I was going out and today it got alot worse so I went to get it looked at and turns out the driveshaft I replaced a year ago is now knocking again!

I really just wanna sell up but I obviously have all these problems so I was thinking would it be cheaper to get everything done and sell or sell like it is for less money!

Car is a 2005 Clio 182 in Liquid Yellow with 35k on the clock

Car needs:
Cambelt in march
4x tyres
Small dent above the door fixed
New front splitter
Wheel refurb

What would it be worth before and after the work is done??

Sorry for the essay

Thanks Luke

From your list of issues the only one that was the cars fault is the driveshaft. A chav throwing a bottle at your car and you driving into a kerb is nothing to do with the fact its a Clio.

Stop being a big girl and just accept all cars will have faults.

true but its just had will be having its 3rd driveshaft now and im loosing interest in it! just after some advice on what i can get for her!

i personally, would get the tyres changed and touch up the wheels myself, wouldnt bother with splitter as half people dont know whether its suppose to have one or not, and the dent unless its that obvious wouldnt bother with either as it may end up looking worse if the colour match doesnt look right then potential buyers may be put off thinking there was more damage.

can just let them knock £400 of the price for the cambelt if the question it, i've no idea about values at the minute though.

as said above, decide whether you really want to sell it or not first, i know i hate mine alot of the time, but after finding a decent road, having a fault free day, week, month whatever i love it again and think there's no point in replacing something that makes me smile. hence getting rid of the mrs.

luke , i was in the exact same boat. Same problem with neds(chavs) and i felt that i had brought the car to how i wanted it to look as far as modding goes so i decided to sell. Do i miss the old LY clio ? - Yes. Am i sorry i sold it? - No. I planned on having the LY for a good few years but like yourself , i had a 1.2 before the 182 and the whole clio thing was just wearing thin. IMO if your hearts not in the car go for a change.

With the paint being the type it is , any sort of chip annoyed me as im a perfectionist. So to see it being stoned or coming out to a carpark ding it really does put your heart out the car. Im almost at that stage again with the meg. I know its had a few typical clio problems but tbh i dont think it sounds like you have a 'bad' one , its just a combination of small things , silly things thats putting you off it.

hey luke also had a few probs with my car but the end of the day its french its a lovely car i was gonna sell my few weeks back but i repaired the problems and now its got me smiling once again get the real problems like the driveshaft and tyres done and roll on i was gonna get a vxr but for 14000 and 20bhp whats the point.

Has the dent damaged the paint?

Some paintless dent removal guys will drill through the inside skin to access dents if you give them the ok. They can then just put a little rubber cap on the access hole. But your probably looking at £80 for that anyway.

Is the driveshaft failure related to the fact you've lowered it? Is it a devere drop?

  Whichever has fuel
Renaults don't like modification.

As soon as you mess with them, they fall to bits.

thats what they done with my old 182. Was £50 per panel but one of the dent he wouldnt touch because he couldnt guarantee it wouldnt break the paint when being pushed out

I'd look into why its eating driveshafts. As Nero says, if its uber decked (which really has no real benefit to the handling so why bother) then its likely that it will keep going thru driveshafts....even more so if the engine mounts are knackered.
If the engine is sitting pissed then the driveshafts are the first thing to take the punishment.

I'd persevere or, buy a cheap diesel to use in the week. £500 can get you a cheap runner for the winter and beyond.
That way the Clio returns to feeling a bit more special.

I had a period a few weeks back that went something like this:
Sunday - car gets impounded for a very dubious parking ticket outside my work on a Sunday afternoon. Cost - £360. Drove 2 miles home.
Wednesday - the next drive, 1 mile to the Mot station. MoT fail, new exhaust and cat.

3 miles for a £1000 :)

I've also had the cambelt and aux service, new brake pads and rear discs and managed to reverse it into a raised kerb while parking after a 250 mile hoon across Austria :)

LOL exactly why i sold the RB dude!

In fact almost exactly why! Cambelt, splitter, tyres, etc!

TBH i'd get the tyres and splitter done and defo cambelt in march which will add to the ease of sale!

De-dent meet will hopefully be in the new year and then you have the summer shows to take it to as it hasnt been to one in its new form yet!

  Ph1 172.
I've had my car 3 months and so far its cost £570 in unexpected repairs/servicing. Not a happy bunny.

OMG, a 2nd hand car suffering wear and tear? Whatever next?!

What do people do to these cars? I've had 5 RS's, current one is the oldest (x reg). The only non-consumable cost (ie brakes, tyres etc) thats gone is the aux belt pulley. And that's despite 25k miles a year, about 9 track days over the last 18 months, and a regular pasting. I think people genuinely don't realise that cars require maintenance.

Yes cars do require maintence, most people realise that. I think what people are getting at is more unforseen costs and finding the money to get them sorted.

Do your research, spend plenty of time looking at cars, get someone to mechanically check it over before buying. I've (touches wood) never had any major issues with any of the second hand cars I've bought.

Advice i will do well to heed next time i purchase a car.

Tbh, there's only so much you can check when buying a car. You can only really do the general 'due diligence' as it were. Can't rock up and say "hi, mind if I just compression test the engine? Rolling road it?". Sometimes it's just unlucky if after the general checks it turns out to be a shitter.

True, but an AA/RAC check is pretty comprehensive, and give's you some comeback.

(Watch my car f**king blow up tomorrow!)

Not a Renault one? That would explain the problem.

oh i didn't realise you had to be a Renault mechanic to own and maintain it well! hero!

was looking at a few Audi s3s so will see but have really fallen out of love with it! i will do all the necessary things and then see then!

Perhaps the shafts are going because its slammed and u boot it with lock on :)

Dont sell it, i have got u a cheap cambelt deal, u found tyres cheap. And we also found wheel referb cheap!!!

Stop moaning :)

I had my 182 for 6 months and nothing went wrong with it bar a crack in the cat (but I knew that anyway)

Had my ph1 a month and the engine mount went, however I have lowered it so I'llet let it off. You have to check the cars out properly when you buy them :rasp:

Mines been on the floor on H&Rs for 5 odd years now and has never gone wrong.
7 years old last month.

Exactly

I've had 3 moddes RS's, all lowered, not replaced one driveshaft in 5 years. Over them yeras probably done around 100k?
