Dreaded Bonnet

One of my colleagues at work has been hit by the dreaded bonnet disaster.

It appears the car has never been into Renault for a re-call when this all came to light.

The bonnet has opened and has bent all the way back, thankfully only damaging the bonnet not the windscreen.

Just wondering if Reno will take any responsibility for the fault if it’s never been checked over.

It’s a 2004 Clio.

When i spoke to renault they said that they have started sending out the letter as recorded delivery (signiture required) so that they could take responibilty off of them and onto the owner as so many havent been in to have it done. Whether this is true or not, who knows

I don't think they have any responsibility once they issue the recall. If you choose to ignore it then what can they do?

Well yeah, that's only if the owner gets the recall letter. I didn't get one, but few months later i watched a clip of watchdog on youtube and the next day went to have it checked over.

Surely they will have the car on record or should have marked the service book to prove it has been done.

In regards to the letter been sent out as mentioned already I dont think she received anything.

I cant remember exactly but I'll check my service book later. They definately checked mine on one of the services.

Its all a farce anyway. I took mine to have its bonnet "checked" and all the guy did was open it, spray some WD40 on the mechanism and shut it again. That was it.

Nothing was replaced or tested.

That's what the trainee mechanics (age 12 or under I'm sure) did to mine as well, I went 'Erm no' told them about the problem, they sh@t themselves and got their boss and he told me to take it to the big Arnold Clarke where they spent 2 days doing it. C*nts.

When I had my old Dynamique I never once got a letter about the bonnet. It started to go funny towards the end too, needed two people to open it! LOL! Luckily mine never flew open whilst driving, etc.

20mins! Did they have a tug while they were there!

Owners responsibility, even after watchdog proved it was faulty Renault still don't pay out.

Poor maintenance.

You get a free 25 point check with it aswell. They bring you a list of all the things wrong with your car and usually an estimated bill of a few £100. Arent they so kind

I don't think its a part problem more a maintenance issue. Basically Renault didn't list oiling the bonnect catch in the dealer service schedule. So over time it can stick and then come open. If you service your car at an independant you'll probably find it had been oiled anyway.

If your bonnet has come up i'd be amazed if it hasn't actually damaged where the hinges are bolted to the shell. An expensive fix.

I fix them weekly, still after all this time.

Bonnet+hinges, 2 catches, wipers+arms, screen+moulding, roof repair sometimes new skin.

did she own the car when the recall was first announced ?

i took mine up to Renault when i first got it and they booked it in no problems (after they had checked on their system that it hadn't been changed before) and changed the whole thing while i waited (took about 10min)

gally do you find the bonnet realigns perfectly without modifying the slam panel?

My old man has just had an 09 mini cooper S in thats been written off after the bonnet came up!

Fook me with the cooper, they are dodgy because they use 2 catches if you don't close properly it only takes one to fail and bamm!

I find if you're using genuine parts the bonnet fit's fine, the problem is the pin on the clio bonnet has a lot of movement.
Best thing to do to get it aligning half decent is put a piece of masking tape over the BLP lock and gently sit the bonnet down then look to see if the pin is hitting the centre of the tape.

TBH it is a maintenance issue IMO, the catch gets dirty, maybe a little corrosion and starts to stick so it doesn't hold securely. When they check them, if there's nothing wrong with the catch then all they will do is oil it up to ensure there's no friction.

How many people lift the bonnet when washing the car ( and not just CS members) , not many I bet. I always wipe down the bonnet shut and under the panels so I'm always taking a regurlar look at it.

Iv got this issue at the moment, the bonnet sticks and it takes 2 people to open the bonnet. Been trying to book it in at Renault all bloody week but i keep getting put on hold between departments and left on the phone for 15-20mins. Im just going to go down there whan i get a chance!!

Think theres a lot of issues regarding this as to who got letters, why some folk didnt and what they actually do ie oil or replace.

I was told that there is too types of mechanism.

Its the safety catch that sticks, not the actual bonnet catch. So this only happens if the bonnet is not shut properly in the first place........

I thought that bonnet catches was part of regular maintainance anyway for general person?

I know i check mine and the clio, even though it opens backwards.

Not sure about that. Look at it this way, to be on the saftey latch in the first place the normal catch has to have failed or the bonnet not shut correctly. Cant see a mass Reanult re-call and replacement because folk arent closing their bonnets correctly ..

Think its more when the catch is released to lift the bonnet or what ever the latch dosent spring back into closed position if not lubed up or if rusted up
