172 code reader...

Where can you get hold of the fault readers??

What sort of price would I be looking at and can they diagnose all faults? (e.g. Why abs light is on, engine management light and even the electrical faults such as the problem I recently had when my hazards wouldn't turn off?)

Thinking of getting one as I figure it'll be cheaper than taking it to Renault for a diagnostic.

Any info would be great. Thanks.

code reader £15 to £30, it will give u a code only (and clears faults from memory)
One that tells you exactly where and what is at fault £5000

So how can you distinguish what's wrong with the car if it only gives you a code?

Are they just used to clear the faults so your lights don't come up on the dash?

The generic ones for 35 quid only read generic fault codes - they are well worth it. The codes can be quite specific and are normally enough to tell you what is the problem.

The Renault "Clip" at 3k does all the Renault specific stuff like disabling air bags, etc.

Where do you get them from then? Apart from the KTEC one, the always seem a little bit more expensive than everywhere else.

A lot of the cheaper one's wont do ABS or maybe even the lights issue you had. Only pure engine faults.

For full diagnostics your talking ££££.

You would be much better taking it to a specialist garage.

Otherwise, RS tuner has a diagnostics feature built into it IIRC, but it isn't as comprehensive as CLIP

I just typed that and lost it all cus my wifi dropped out, but yer, i use a garage what charge a tenner for anything my RSTuner cant do. If you get a recent RST you can add on abs and airbag aswell.

Are they the things that remap your car? How much are you talking for one of those new, as cant you use one that has already been used on another car?
(sorry for all the noobish questions)

If you want to map and you buy a used one you will have to pay an unlocking fee of about £40. They go for about £100 used.

Can diagnose any compatible car though, dont need unlocking for that. If you want to be able to do airbag/ABS you need to make sure its the newer model though.

Hmm ok, what does the map do exactly? Make the engine run more efficiently?
How much are these things new, and where can you get them from? Are they worth the money?

I think they are worth the money, hard to get hold of new though.

They raise the limiter slightly and smooth the power out so you get more power lower in the revs, but you sacrifice the harsh 5k kick.

You gain more power across the rev range... thats what gives the perception of a "smoothed out" kick at 5,000rpm.

I have an RStuner, if you want I can plug it into your car and take a quick look at what fault codes are being thrown out :)

I can also put a map on for you, about 40euro for the map / license IIRC

You might aswell buy a used RST than use grays (if your mapping that is!), since you wont lose anything on it when you come to sell it! Your paying the unlock fee anyway.

I would offer you some maps i have but i think they are 182 specific.

You can download any maps of the fastchip website, you pay per license / map to use on a different vehicle :)

Yup, I'm gonna have a look at his though, to see what they're about and to see exactly what it does etc... Will make it easier for me to understand if it's right in front of me lol.

Are the maps not preset into the RStuner?

maps are just a file you send via the rstuner, so you can choose your map as more come out, like pops and bangs eventually might.

What exactly will I need to get if I order one of these (once in stock)???

There's lots of options at the bottom of the fast chip page, and not sure what I'd need... :S

Need abs and airbag modules if you want to touch them, i think the eobd II module means you can also read other cars (i.e not renault)

So if I were to order it for mine, and I wanted the ABS module straight away, select the Clio 2 AbS module instead of the EOBD II.
So basically to buy one it's €170 plus the €29 for the ABS module... Equals about £162.
Do you just download the maps for the car or are they supplied on a disc or something once purchased?

yep, just select it instead when ordering, you can order more at once through the store if you want both though. Maps are dowloaded from the store.
