Gave to car a mini detail.

The Boosh!

Car  Elise, Duster
So as i've not washed the car for 6 months I thought it was about time I gave it a little bit of attention. Only downside was I picked a day where it was pissing it down but I plowed on anyway.

So a few dirty pictures:

We began by starting on the wheels (these were a serious ball ache) and gave them a quick scrub.

DSC_0028-1.webp

Then we banged on a layer of foam:

DSC_0033.webp

I left this to dwell for about 5 minutes, and went around the car with the jet wash getting most of the surface dirt off the paintwork to minimise swirling. After doing this I gave it a proper wash with the mitt/ two buckets.

For those of you who own a RB one of these, you will know how bad the tar gets on there; especially up the back of the boot:

Will tackle this later...

In the mean time, to ensure the paintwork was as clean as possible for the claying stage I gave it another foam and a wash:

DSC_0039-1.webp

So onto the tar spots - First wave of attack was a mild clay

DSC_0056.webp

DSC_0057.webp

With that PITA job done, I rinsed off all the s**te and washed it again

DSC_0039-1.webp

Next port of call was the wheels... On heinsight this was a bit of an arse about tit way to go about it but its just the way I prefer.

Anyway, after all the washing etc here is what I was left with with the wheels. This was an absolute nightmare to remove. I'm not sure if its baked on brake dust, tar or a combination of tar but i had to pull out all my weapons to f**k it off.

First port of call was my trusty Tardis:

DSC_0043.webp

Left this on for 5 minutes and gave it a scrub... Didn't budge :dead:

So I whipped out the bilberry neat spec:

Still wasn't 100% which i was pissed off with, so I had a very stiff detailing brush which i don't normally like using, but decided to give it ago. After a lot of scrubbing and perseverance I was left with this:

DSC_0048.webp

Not 100% but I'm taking them off this week to give them a proper going over, so will clay them and get some cutting compound on there.

After this episode I went round the car looking for the thicker tar spots that the clay couldn't remove and gave it a quick blits of the Tardis:

DSC_0058.webp

I then clayed my reg plates and gave them a proper clean and polish:

DSC_0059.webp

Went round the car with a drying towel to ensure it was all as dry as possible for the polish

DSC_0060.webp

As i've had my polisher nicked, I can't correct the paint work (i'm taking it to dawns next month when she's free for some paint correction).

Instead I opted for a polish that was full of fillers :D

DSC_0061.webp

I then applied some wax on top of the polish:

And as far as the paintwork goes thats about all I did. What it looked like once i'd finished:

Now i've done with the paint I cleaned the exhaust up a wee bit:

Finally I delegated the job of cleaning the engine bay to my mate, who did a cracking job. No befores i'm afraid so just a few randoms:

Whilst I was at it I gave the interior a quick clean and fitted my new mats i bought from work:

She's getting on a bit now :( I've done almost 40k miles in her since I bought it.

DSC_0054.webp

So thats about it! Some of you eagle eyes may have noticed a missing arch liner... That got munched, so in the next couple of days i'm going to be playing with my front suspension setup to stop the scrubbing during hard cornering. I also need to fit the new arch I got from work:

DSC_0078.webp

No drastic plans for the future really. within this/next month its getting:

  • front bumper respray
  • detail from Dawn (magpiev6)
In the long term I want some premium suspension and some spacers for the rear wheels, but other than that I just want to keep it in minty condition, and do a few of the RS trackdays when they release the dates. Should be a good year!

Cheers.

Love it! It's like mine but a nicer blue :o

I have the same problem with crap getting baked onto my 2118s. It sounds strange but I find using poorboys wheel sealant often gets rid of some of it. Last time I had them off and sealed them I'd got to the stage with cleaning them where I'd given up... then when I went to use the selant I noticed it cleaned them right up! Like so...

Brilliant, i love RB :)
How long did that all take btw ?

Started it about twelve and was in the pub for half 5 so about 5 & half hours with two of us, but we weren't rushing or anything... That included brews/catching up with my mate who was helping me. I would have done it all on my own in about 3 to 4 hours I reckon.

Nice work dude, stunning finish too, some great gloss/reflections.

<3

Nose it's one of my favs Luke. Good on you for soldiering through!

Thanks boys :)

Awesome - Bit odd how a sealent removes it though (?). I will give the polish a go first, I haven't got any poorboys sealent :o

Does waxing the wheels stave off that crap between the spokes then? If it does i'm just going to rape them with the collinite.

Get some Zaino Z2 on them dude, nothing gets through that s**t on wheels. Easily outlasts the Poorboys, and Mr Dalton himself uses it on wheels.

Did you seal the wheel before you fit them originally?

Looking good though, needs an engine cover to tidy that bay up!

lol, they neaten it all up. I'd never had a proper engine cover before this car, was well excited :o

Going to have to keep on top of my wheels then :(
Sometimes wish i had gone anthra for the ease of keeping them clean.

Exact reason i didn't go for white. They look nice but forget cleaning them every two minutes. I don't know how Christopher does it.

jeeze, that was dirty! Shame some little skanks stole your gear :(

Lovely job, looks so much better clean! Can't wait to get my hands on her ;)

Good tips Russ.

Maybe use the tardis first next time Luke? Will save you time and clay, tardis would have taken those spots off in no time at all. :)

Looks fab mate, RB comes up very well from what i've seen.

Oh and get a sample of ironx for the wheels it'll help get rid of even more crud...

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sample-sizes/cquartz-ironx-50ml-sample/prod_771.html

I've found when you use tardis first, then go for a clay it doesn't drag across the paint properly. The clay kinda skips even with lube on it, so I had to wash the car properly again and then clay when I did it that time around. Which is why I clay first then follow up with tardis - Just what I prefur. I will take a look at that cheers mate, need to save some money up first though :(

You need to make sure the car is devoid of any Tardis before you clay buddy. The "non-slip" feeling you're getting is what I first experienced with Tardis vs clay. It basically melts the clay on contact!

A quick wash, spray down or decent wipe over and the area will be fine to clay after Tardis.

I always wash after Tardis, it would probably ruin your clay if you didn't. It's easy to ruin clay then complain to the maker, when usually it's stuff left on the car that degrades it.

Just my 2p. Tardis will take off a lot of crap before the claying part which is always good, the less stuff on the clay bar the better. :)

Not a fan of the wheels, but lovely car.

Was looking at a racing blue 200, and it's definitely a darker shade than used on the 182.

Absolutely lovely.

Great work there mate. I know exactly what you mean about the tar spots which get sprayed up the boot, it does my nut!

I am baffled, either you and your mate look the same and were wearing the same top or he did all the work? or you did all the work and have an imaginary friend?

Done a stunning job on the car mate.

One question for you tho is where did you get the tray thing in your boot as in the picture below

Was in the car when I bought it mate but i believe you can buy them from Renault. I will look up the part number when i get back to work next week.

You can indeed buddy. Interested to hear Russ' point on the wheel application for Z2. I wonder if ClioToby knows this...

That a joke?

If not, then yeah, Z2, Z5 and AIO can be used on wheels and paintwork. However, I wouldnt use any of the 3 without ZFX. Expensive maybe but long lasting, great sheeting, good beading and good looks are all part of it with ZFX's Z5/2/AIO. Youll get a fair amount out of a bottle too as it goes far.
Someone told me it takes the fun out of detailing but if your after long lasting protection then I honestly dont know what works better and what lasts longer. I use it on company cars or cars I dont want to spend the time and money detailing all the time, washing and drying is easy. Good one step product after claying the car and hardly time consuming of difficult.

Im starting to like AIO on darker cars now having used it a fair bit recently (4 company cars in the past 3 weeks).

Like gally mentioned, Iron X will get rid of that s**t on your wheels. May take a few applications though. Are your brakes okay lol, remember my thread about wearing my brakes down to the metal in this section?

Once youve done it, take some time to remove the wheels, ironx them, clay them, make sure they are squeaky clean, and then apply ZFX'd Z5 or whatever 3 times per wheel following application guidelines. After that wash them with diluted shampoo and a brush.
