Steering click since changing track rod

Was an advisory on my previous MOT that the drivers side track rod end would need changing, so i changed it and had the wheel alignment done and now when turning full lock im getting a clicking sound.

Im thinking the old track rod allowed play where as now a new stiffer one is putting more strain on whatever other part... so when i turn full lock im getting a clicking... im thinking it could be the top suspension mounts, its only the right side... haven't fully diagnosed it just asking for on line help seeing as im on here...

My previous MOT the tester said the steering rack joints could need changing, was going to ask about what these where but a quick google shows there's joints in the inner rod that attaches to the steering rack right? Is that a pig of a job? would seem it in my head.... im now wondering is the new track rod is putting strain on the older inner rods... but im also leaning towards clicking top mounts.

Just rambling and thinking things through, help and advice appreciated!

Think ive found the inner replacement rods, how hard are they to change?

Seeing as ive done the track end suppose its just more of a tight squeeze? Could you change them without undoing the track rod end? i guess it would be everything apart tbh

Im just thinking about that because my MOT is may... i dont that thats the clicking problem

they are sh1te to change, best to buy the proper tool for it

Also rough estimate cost for a private mechanic to change both? labour time etc?

i would of thought an hours labour would cover it

Ah well thats not good! that is expensive for the tool.

So im looking at £40 quid parts and probably £30 labour... im not even sure if they need doing but dont want to risk the car off the road for a few days because it needs them doing after MOT.

disconnect the track rod end and you should be able to feel and movement in them(try not to move the locking nut else the tracking will need doing), mine were shot on my dCi but it had done 144k

Right ive had a look got someone to turn the wheel, a clicking noise definatly coming from what i would say is the middle, so im thinking drivers side inner rod, im also wondering if the nuts holding the rack on are loose, thinking for sure that changing to a new track rod has put strain on the old inner rod, and changing the other side track rod would also cause cliclking, so im looking at 2x inner rod and 1x track rod..... my wallet will hurt after replacement alloy that was buckled, new tyre, track rod and now this, this month!

Right i need some advice before i contact my mechanic, id rather not bother him if i dont have to...

Can anyone talk to me about the steering rack mounts? ive read if i tighten them up briefly to see if it solves the problem i know its them, im 50-50 between rack mounts or inner rods, sounds like it could be drivers inner rod after new outer track rod...

But also seeing as i was told last year the mounts would need changing i also thing it could be them... could be a bloody combo knowing my luck...

Are the rack mounts changeable easily? or does the rack have to come off?

If you're on about the 1.2 in your profile I don't think they have rack bushes. When I fitted one to my car it just bolted direct to the subframe.

I got fully under the car today, i saw yeah the rack has no bushes, i couldnt get to the bolts with the ARB in the way, but they where tight as a nuns anyway....

The passangers track rod end i could waggle from side to side, if you can imagine being under the car and reaching under the wheel, i think it needs changing but its not where the noise is coming from, the drivers side track end has been changed so thats okay, i think its the inner drivers side rod but i am unsure to be honest.

The click/crack/clunk sounds like the drivers side, i got someone to look whilst i turned the wheel the top mount didnt look like it was clicking but it sounds round about there, i am baffled now, think ill have to let my mechanic diagnose it unless i can diagnose it myself.
