What gearbox do i need for my 2002 172 ?

I think the diff in my gearbox has went

I was going from second into third and crunch, it popped out of gear so i put it back in gear and let off the clutch pedal and there was no drive.
The revs shot up and the car went nowhere.

So i put it into fourth and it was the same, fifth too as well as first and second apart from those gears having a crunching noise when in gear as you attempt to drive.
This noise is now gone (although car goes nowhere).


The car had its gearbox oil changed 9 months ago with 80w90 Castrol as reccomended on here and has been fine up till now.

I heard that some 172 and 182 gearboxes are different so was looking for advice on how much the boxes are going for.

AFAIK they are all the same, I have one I removed from a 52 plate 172 had 66k on the clock..

You need to check if yours has got a speedo drive on the back of the box. Most of the ones that do are Ph1 172's or 172 cups, but some early Ph2 172's I've seen have had the speedo drive.

If it has this, you'll need to get a 'box with it.

The speedo stopped working when the box went.
Even when i got the car towed a short distance it was reading nothing.

So i'm guessing its a spedo drive box ?

I had the same problame and it was the synchronize of the gear that was broken

this Bearingmaking the noize of a tired spring

watch the diffrence between both synchronization rings the one who isnt broken was for my 1 gear and the one who broken make the problems that you talkking about

if you continue driving like that you will allso broke this (the most expenssive part - in israel it cost 350$)

but the diffrence between us is that i had this problem only in the second all the others was working great the other problem is when the garage opens the gear it will be never works the same and its only a matter of time untill the gear gives he's life to god

Yep, sounds like it's a speedo drive box yeah. Cars without the speedo drive take the reading from the ABS sensors, so the speedo would still work..

As i thought, and i'm guessing its a JC5 129 Box the same as Ph1 clios and cups ?


What needs removed to get the box out

Surely i don't have to remove the engine, slam panel, radiator hoses, exhaust manifold, plenum ?

Engine can stay in, but I remove all of the rest just for access.

I don't really want to drain the coolant though.
Its not long been changed.

And can it be done with manifold on ?
As i know how brittle exhaust bolts can be

You ideally want everything off so you can jack the engine up or down freely..

Draining the coolant is easy, just re-use the stuff that comes out!

I guess i'll just pull the bottom hose and drain it.

I know a man who can sort your box for you locally. He did mine when it was popping out of gear and did a great job. I got all the bits from agency transmission who are miles cheaper than Aberdeen Renault. Coolant is about £10 for 5 litres mate.

Whats involved in pulling the subframe Fred ?
And does the steering rack hinder anything ?
