Gearbx oil change

After reading posts about gearboxes being vulnerable, it's got me thinking.

Will changing the gearbox oil help with it's lifespan?

Is it a costly job for a garage to do?

Very cheap to have done, easy to do.

Should be done around 70k anyway iirc, and it could improve the smoothness of the box.

Cheers mate. Box isn't rough at all at the moment but not sure how thorough the previous owner was, only on 57k but will get it done anyway.

The gearbox oil is not on any of the scedule services. But it's so easy to do.

Hi mate my box didnt feel rough. Had to have a new passenger driveshaft last week tho and the box oil changed. Big improvement and even smoother than before. Mines on 65k and feels a whole load better now

Do not pay to have this done, really. Go to halfords and get a bottle ( not sure on code) and remove plug on bottom of box to release the old oil.... Put plug back in and remove the other plug and fill til level with plug... Easy peasy

And not sure of life span if I'm honest but it can certainly ease up friction on shifting.. Sorry for double post

Rosskerr - is it really that easy? Car up on axle stands I'd imagine, undo plug on underside of box. Then just top it up from the top??

Fill it at the wingnut on the front of the box , will take a bit of thin hose, a funnel and a bit of fiddling to feed it in (you can see it from under the car, feel it behind the front grill I think)

People say not to fill it at the breather on the top.

Takes 3.1 litres IIRC

I certainly wouldn't pay to have it changed mate. Mine had to be done due to the passenger driveshaft being changed. Just go buy some and do it yourself

It's not as easy as that though, I tried undoing the refill screw on the front the other day and it wouldn't budge,
there's just not enough room to get the leverege you need to unsrew it.

My gearbox went bang and I wanted to check the level but it's impossible to move, I don't know how garages do it without removing all the pipes in the way.

big ass screwdriver and a hammer helps with the screw

I'll give that a go once it stops pissing it down, seeing as it's getting replaced it won't matter if it gets mangled.

But as long as you can get the underneath bolt off it's just one bolt off, drain,bolt back in, fill up using a funnel etc and job done?

Prolong the life of it you guys reckon?

I've not changed mine myself but from searching previous post on here, the gearbox oil change procedure is as follows,

Unscrew the plastic screw on the front of the box first, if you can't get that off there's no point in draining it.
(thats also how you check the level, it should be just below if not level with the screw)

Undo the screw or whetever underneath of the box and drain,

put back in with a new copper crush washer,

use a funnel & pipe to refill the gearbox oil until it trickles out the front (3 litres)
TransElf NFJ 75W80 GL-4, but 75W90 GL-4 will do,

replace the plastic screw on the front and you're done.
