What are everyone's thoughts on 2005-2010 Astra VXR's? I know nothing at all about them but for the money they go for these days you seem to get alot for your cash. If not one of these, what would you suggest for around the same money? 7k ish.

I like them. They are properly fast as well and sound good IMO.

The torque steer crew will be along soon no doubt :rasp: Never driven one so couldn't comment.

There is of course the Megane as probably the biggest contender, along with the Focus ST and leon cupra and the slightly left wing Mazda3 MPS all as other considerations. Or up the budget by a grand and opt for my standard choice (130i lol).

My housemate has a 130i, its not alot quicker than the 172 imo although alot smoother and generally better as you would expect, although not as 'fun' to drive.

They sound amazing with an aftermarket exhaust I think. I've never driven one so couldn't comment on the drive. I'd like to though.

On the subject of Astra VXR, did anyone catch EVO's review of the new Astra VXR vs Meg 265 & FRS?

Astra came last, Megane came first lol. Quite impressive tbh.

The nurburgring Vxr sounds fantastic !!! But that about where the praise ends . Sure it's quick on a straight motorway but it handles like the titanic and it's a vauxhall.......

Yeh drove it at rockinham 2 days ago. Quite heavy, numb experience. It's more comfortable than any renaultsport and carries quite abit of pace. It's brakes are quite awesome I must say. I still prefer the meg but at the end of the day it's what car you gel most with.

I tested one and i thought the dash was going to land in my lap.It had done 80k but was the only one for miles. It rattled and creaked a lot and in general was pretty poor. The engine was quite punchy though but the rest let it down.

I like them, can get them with some good spec. Plenty of modifications available for them. Not a car I would personally own though.

Would prefer a Megane r26 or a Golf gti/R32.

Not a car that i would own but to be honest after driving my mates nurburgring edition which is standard other than a map i was quite shocked. A fun car for the average joe and quick too. Yeah if you take a megane on track and you drive like a pro it'll be quicker but thats not what most people look for.

I simply couldn't be associated with the other owners. Call it snobbery or whatever but they are an ultimate chav wagon around my way. The Ring edition doesn't seem to be as bad but some of the bellends driving Vxr's are off the scale!

Agreed. The only person I know with one is a chavvy bouncer. The concentration of them increases towards Wrexham as well.

Ive owned a Nurburgring edition. Awesome sound. Actually one of the best I've owned. i put every off the shelf handling improvement on it i could, bushes anti roll bars braces coilovers etc. still understeered dramatically. Mine was a stage 3 around 290-300hp and that was pretty much its limit unless you were going to throw a good 7k on forging and bigger turbo etc. i wouldn't go back personally.

The Ring edition does sound superb.

Look so dated now imo.

Bit like MX5's my way yet CS still bums them...

Horrendous image and as gally says, for all te right reasons.

Dealers werent taking them in not so long ago because they simply couldnt get rid of them, far too much supply and no one wanted them. With any luck they will fall sub 3k.

They are silly quick if you have the money to tune them, a friend has one running around 450bhp. It certainly goes well!

I'd reccomend one. My mate has a stage 3 Astra vxr running 330 bhp and it sounds incredible and surely doesn't hang around! I've had a little drive aswell and it is a lovely car to drive. The torque on his is something else aswell!

  M135i and the shed
Stereotypes and crap drive aside, the VXR has the worst dashboard in existence, closely followed by the Mk2 Leon. The interior makes my R26 look classy and interesting..........................

  Suzuki Swift Sport
Never driven one, but my friend had one who likes similar cars to me (good handling hot hatches) and he only kept his for about a month. Said it was very numb but went quite well in a straight line. There is one up at work and I do admit it sounds brilliant but still would not get one. Meg would be much better!

  Evo 5 RS
Just don't, ever. They're cheap now, but it's just tack. I had a chin wag over them, but save and get a decent R26 IMO

  182 cup
Had one running 315hp proven only sold due to high running costs on fuel to be honest! Would quite happily buy another when theye got a bit cheaper.

  DC2 TypeR / E36 328i
Engines are s**t, gearboxes are s**t, handling is s**t

Quick in a straight line though, when they work. One of my mates had a stage 2 one with a piper exhaust, sounded nuts through the gears for an Astra
