Can punctures to tyre side walls be repaired?
I've got avon ZV5's (I think!) which appear to have quite thick solid side walls and my neigbour said that because of this I might be able to get it repaired (he's no mechanic/tyre fitter and I really doubt it), I thought I'd get a proper answer from here before I look into finding a replacement or whatever

Yes but it's classed as structural so most places can't do it.

Illegal for a normal garage not just frowned upon I believe.

My understanding is they have to be bsau159 approved.

Cheers for that, I guess the spare will be staying on till I can find a cheap new/part worn replacement then
