Who else has spax rsx w/outboard rears on ph1 172???

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
Just wondered if anyone else's, the rear wheel/tires have scrubbed again coils. Been on for a week or so now. Only started today. So guess its settled now I've got a few miles on them!
Got 5mm spacers on rear. But doesn't seem to be enough.
Bigger spacers be the cure?

  Track 172, Focus RS
Only used mine for one track day and mine where catching but i put that down to 205 tyres and no spacers! Ive got 195 tyres now and will be getting spacers very soon so ill let you know how i get on, on my next track day

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
Jeez 205 and no spacers would definitely catch. It was just mm's with 195 and no spacers.
Think I'm gonna have to go 15mm on the back at least.
Just hope that solves it

I couldnt hear a rubbing noise, i could just tell from the springs when i took the wheels off

They were developed on my car, and there's no scrubbing here.

the car was on superleggeras without spacers when it went down, with a higher offset than the standard wheels, so I can't see why there should be any scrubbing at all?

Strange. Gonna have to have a look when it's light tomorrow I guess. That was my first guess. And when I put my hand through the wheel there wasn't anywhere near enough room to get a finger between tire and coil

may sound daft but rear bearing hasn't gone has it
Might have done a guess. Could be that dry sort of rubbing grinding. And i have on actually noticed it on 1 side. And only notice the noise when turning swiftly to the right. So weight would be on the left (offending) side, no noises when driving straight!

Yes sounds like a wheel bearing as i had the same noise! All good when it was repaired though

yep i'd say bearing due to the turning thing had this happen before and it was bearing, seems you may have caught it early enough tho as last time i had a rear bearing go it collapsed which isn't good at all, get it looked at as soon as you can mate

Aiii, I've had bearings go completely before. Not good. Yep just noticed tonight. So will look to get it sorted straight away

Taken the wheel off this morning. Coil has taken quite a scrubbing.
Not too happy. As they were brand new on last week and now they are all scrubbed up :(

Its more likely that yours is catching and others aren't is because apart from your fecked bearing there is different stub axle's fitted between ph1,ph2,cup/trophy. So its basically like having different thickness spacers fitted to all them cars with dave88's stub's being the biggest iirc hence no scrubbing.

So I imagine fixing the bearing and fitting 15mm spacers or so should fix it. There is a very minimal gap with the 5mms on. And obviously the bearing that I reckon gave way yesterday is causing enough play to rub.
Sound about right swede?

Yeah I would think so given your description, Just check 15mm spacers aren't too big that the tyre then runs on the rear quarter panel ;)

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
Yea it's something I will have to measure up before I decide. Would probably be ok at the moment. But still want to drop it a bit.
Thanks swede

My 195 rears rub with 5mm spacers :S Annoying as hell tbh!

Wahey, I knew there would be someone in exactly the same boat.
Looks like bigger spacers are the way forward. Gonna have to get it done ASAP. It is annoying. Just have to slow right down for corners. Which isn't why I bought the spax in the first place :(

When I say rub, I mean on the arches, not the coils! I have no spacers on the rear atm and they are fine, just the od creak at slow speeds randomly. I think coz its they are set low the rubber bump stops? seems to get stuck at the top now and then, sound fine at speeds just abit unhealthy at slow speeds sometimes :S

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
Ahh they're only 3mms. Definitely need something bigger on there. Fronts feel really close aswell. But they're not rubbing. Only passenger side rear has rub marks.
Could probably run 10mm on rear and 15mm on front.
If you could price up for that. Also Dan, do you keep bearings in stock. As rear might have gone. Don't want to replace brakes on rear though. Although its a good time to do it. I just can't afford it!

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
I never needed spacers on my monaco at the rear actually.

have you checked tyre pressures Scott?

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
I haven't checked pressures. But they look/feel ok. Only did them a week and half ago or so. Still the wheel feels too close to the coil. Obviously if a bearing had gone there would be that little bit of play. Which could be making it foul on the one side. As there is no evidence anywhere else!

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
Wheels are fine. Never had a problem with them before. Only noticed it started rubbing yesterday. Which I would say point to fooked bearing. Giving it the extra play it needed. As was fine before. Just close!

Well your not the only one where the tyres are rubbing on the coils but its not a big deal, nothing spacers cant fix which are on my to buy list anyway!

Would appear that spacers are definitely needed in some case then. Are you also in ph1?
Going along with what swede said earlier, each model having different stub axles, acting like a bigger spacer. With ph1 being the smallest. I know you had f1's on your dan, but it was ph2! Now owned by dan mallett.
Dan M, did you have the trackday rsx kit on your ph1 without spacers?

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
I had a little look back at his car history. Didn't get to far on iPhone though.
Would like go know if he had full track kit though. As without any spacers at all on the ph1, literally blowing the wheel when stationary would make it foul the coil. Was stupidly close

  Track 172, Focus RS
No mine is ph2, i cant hear any rubbing noise and ive got no interior so it must only be touching very slightly

lol, it wasn't that close, it was about 10mm clearance with 3mm spacers on.

All this for a bearing....Could have fixed it yesterday if you'd called, got one on the shelf :p
