Got a decent discount on my mac when i bought it. It does vary on products, not sure if iphones are covered.
To get discount either you need to go into a store, or phone up and send an email with the photo id.

This. I bought a MacBook whilst I was at Uni from home. Went through fine and they didn't ask for any proof either.

Also you get 3 years apple care with the student deals. When you register your product, it should give you the option.

I think the amount of discount you receive varies by which Uni you're using. Think I got 12% off when I bought my iMac nearly 3 years ago, may have been 15% though.
