Gearbox whine when accelerating

Had a search but couldn't really find a definitive answer to my problem.

I had my gearbox oil changed a couple of months back when it was getting serviced, and recently the gearbox has started making a whining noise at about 60-80mph, but only when accelerating. It does it in 4th and 5th and can just be heard in 3rd too as I reach the top of the rev range. Does it at the same road speed in all these gears.

It only happens under acceleration and goes away if I slow down or put my foot on the clutch. Sounds a lot like the whine you get from a straight cut racing box or a supercharger.

Anyone any ideas what this could be? Am I looking at a new gearbox or does it sound like a fixable problem?

essentially yes, but the likely hood of it actually going pop is pretty slim, i'd perdsonally just drop and check the oil and replace with new again to the correct level

put it this way, the 172 box in my mk1 turbo (290bhp, 270lb/ft) was whining the day it went in, 10k ago and 6 track days plus pod 1/4 mile use and its still going strong

not sure if this is relevant or not as it wasnt on the same box but

a few back i had a work horse astra dti,the diff whine came on in 1st 1st and progressed through 2nd/3rd/4th over a course of 2/300 mile

i had no choice but to keep driving it and it locked the front wheels dead when i tried shifting gear

that was at about 40/45 so my advice is dont drive it as that could easily have been a pile up
