It's not a hard job dropping the box out, just time consuming really... Access is tight on a few bits that need to come off.

It wasn't completely stripped no, the teeth were extremely worn. Had all gone to almost a half moon shape rather then triangle if that makes sense.
Yeah it was the offside shaft. If you jack up that wheel and turn it you'll hear a strange clanking/ grinding noise and feel roughness.

Are you putting 12v to the trigger on the starter solenoid or onto the main positive feed coming down from the battery?
Also which one are you getting 12v out when tying to crank? Both?
Stupid but have you checked all your fuses, inside and outside the car?

I had this exact same problem not long after getting my 182, exact symptoms you are describing.
In the end once we got it jacked up and had a proper look it wasn't the box. It was the splined coupling that joins one of the drive shafts to the gearbox. New splined sleeve was about twenty quid...
