These have been bugging me for years.
We all know how bad the rubber coating looks. So I removed it and the paint leaving them to soak in

Dettol for a couple of days.
I found on a modeling website that's what they use to strip paint without damaging the plastic.

A quick rub down with some fine sand paper then plastic plastic primer.

Then they were sprayed using Halfords grey metallic spray M1-470 then matt lacquer.

Really pleased with how they've turned out.
They look a bit more silver in the photos than real life.

Intrigued regarding the dettol. What specific type are we talking? (General hand soap, alcohol based sanitiser etc).

Sorry. I should have been more specific. It's Dettol liquid antiseptic, as in the photo.
Use it neat and leave it to soak for a couple of days and all the rubber coating and paint just comes away from the plastic. You just have to give it a good wash after in clean water, under a tap.
From what I've read though, it has to be Dettol, not some cheaper copy version.
