Clio 182 suspension with quaife lsd

  Clio 182
hi, I have a Clio 182 which is modified. It’s got a quaife lsd , cage, seats and belts. I’m just really struggling on what suspension to get. The suspension I’m on now is all mixed and match and it handles like 💩 really bad understeer. I do a few hill climbs and track days as well as some spirited driving. I’m struggling trying to find what suspension to use. I had a standard Clio 182 with cup suspension and that handled amazing I’m debating putting some oem cup suspension back on. Found it to be a good all rounder. Would like to know if any of you have any suggestions. I’ve never owned coil overs before and worried about spending nearly a grand for it not be what I’d like but speaking of which a new set of shocks and springs all oem works for it as 800 pounds not including top mounts. Any ideas would be great thanks!

It could do, I’m going to need new suspension anyway as my old is rust and all mixed and matched. I’ll try and get some good suggestions and if I still don’t like the handling I’ll give them a go.

Either cup shocks with grams springs or at just over a grand BC coilovers with a soft spring rate.

I've tracked my 182 on cup shocks and grams springs for years and it handled pretty well on track and was great in the road.

That being said, coilovers, proper geo setup with corner weighting has transformed the car but that will set you back at least £1500-2000.

If you do decide to go coilovers I'd suggest getting a fairly soft spring rate and set it up slightly under standard ride height, it will drive so much better than decked on hard springs.

Bilstein B14’s are the best coilovers for the road. Fact. They drive absolutely lush on them.
A bit too soft for hill climbs I’d imagine but if you drive a lot on the road, definitely have a go in someone’s car with them on. 👌🏽

My last 182 was a flipper so I didn’t want to invest in coilovers. I put new OE cup shocks on and grams springs. A tiny bit harsher than standard but a very compliant ride and not crashy at all. Make the car look lovely too.

Prior to that I had a ph1 172. Couldn’t get any standard springs (NLA I believe) so I went with new cup shocks and Eibach pro lines. (So they were black; look standard) slightly better than factory imo. It did have a complete front end refresh so that may have helped, but the drive from a suspension point of view was very good. So good in fact that the car has been in Evo magazine twice since I sold it. 😂

A rear anti roll bar will help with your understeer. As will -2 camber with some camber bolts.

I 100% agree with this. My 182 was on standard cup suspension when I got it and fitting cooksport springs made it worse on the road. B14's were so much better on the road with the ride height just as you prefer. I'd say for road use they are the best option after standard suspension.

Be careful if considering the roll centre kit, as it has rose joints which will affect the class you are in for hills / sprints. Im in A2 in Scotland, road going cars so allowed quite a few mods however blue book states that bushing material can be uprated for poly etc however no rose joints.

Im running KW V2's on mine, there is alot of threads on people running gaz or BC racing and with different spring rates to suit the application

I’ve got some bilsten b14 and going to fit them this weekend. I’m hoping it will handle a lot better and I’m sure it will. I have some pms solid top mounts and a strut brace (my car already has a roll cage) and I also have some power flex rubber top mounts which fit with the oem. Just wondering what you guys use top mount wise.

Thanks for your comment Mertin about the roll centre kit. I’m hoping i wont need to fit some after my new b14s and I wasn’t aware about how it can affect the hill climb class so thanks for that.

You have all been really helpful.

Top mounts was another sore point with our regs, as some were running solid top mounts such as PMS with their strut brace and that was a no no aswell.
I proper 4 wheel laser alignment geo setup will do it the world of good aswell when you get your B14's on.

I would also consider fitting cup lower arms which have increased castor or you can weld up your existing arms and re-drill a new hole further forward to give max castor. Another common mod which is reccomended by alot who race clio's

I’ve fit my Clio 182 with the b14 they look really nice but I’m having a few problems. I don’t know if it’s me being dumb but any help would be really appreciated. Ive fitted them with pms solid top mounts and I fit some camber bolts as well for when I get the tracking done. My standard wheels 205 45 16 keep hitting the suspension and rubbing on them. I then put the original bolt back in instead of the camber bolt and same happened again. I’ve tried raising the suspension but you need arms like popeye. Really really stiff not too sure if this is normal or not. Anyway I’ve got decent amount of thread left to raise it but still. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you using the adjustment c- spanner’s on your coilovers? Once the car is in the air they should be easy to spin.

Really not impressed with the b14. It’s like chocolate metal. The 7mm Allen key has rounded off when torquing it to spec. Adjusting them is nearly impossible. Honestly it might drive good but so far I’m not impressed at all

The shock allen key top rounds off on all shocks. Best off giving it a couple of ugga duggas with the gun to tighten from experience.

My b14 have 2x locking rings for the rideheight adjustment. Are you undoing the bottom one first? They will go tight if preloading the spring.

  Clio 182
thanks for all your reply’s everyone. Mine has only got one locking nut which is really strange. I’ve checked to see if there are any grub screws which you’d assume there would be and there isn’t. It does move using the c spanner and hitting it with a big hammer but I don’t want to cause any damage. can you guys move yours by hand when you car is off the ground. My other thought could be that it’s the factory paint and just needs a couple of good taps to break it loose.

separate question for when I manage to set the coil overs. What height do you guys run at from centre or wheel to the wheel arch roughly. And what’s a good camber set up for road, track and hill climbs. Cant have too much as on hill climbs the tyres don’t warm up as quickly.
