Is that from cold?? Does it stop when the thing is all warm? Could be the piston rings wearing and burning oil when the revs and loading is high. Most cars do this at that age. Keep flogging it, if it dies get a new one, but have fun in the meantime.
Another help surrounding this area and a really cheap way of achieving the same thing is to use some heat wrapping!! This would generally wrap around your manifold to reduce the hot air under the bonnet (or increase cold air - which ever way you wanna look at it), plus it has the effect of...
Wheel bearings are a favourite to break. Easy to change if you have a press (just changed all 4!!), be wary of the garage wanting to change other stuff as well though - lower arms are a nice earner for the mechanics!!
It certainly wont do any harm, as generally the more cold air the better but with a standard airbox it probably wont make a noticable difference either.
I tried somethinglike that on my Williams, unplugged the ECU left it for a week or so. Plugged it back in, filled her up with superplus and I have to say that there is a bit of a difference. Kinda wipes the memory after a while (not sure how long though, then starts from new with a full tank of...
