Its brilliant looking and the power to weight is impressive, actually.
Like I said, the comparison should be Corsa, not Astra or you may as well compare Vectra 2.8 turbo VXR with the Clio.
The Clio 182 is a match for the CORSA VXR, the Astra is in a different price bracket, performance bracket and size bracket.
The Clio 182 is brilliant. I owned one.
But lets not pretend it can do things it cant.
Badge snobbery is just that.
The new VXR range is brilliant, from the Corsa through the Astra and Vectra, to the car I also happen to own, the Monaro 6.0 V8.
180/240/280/400 bhp respectively and a LOT of development time in all of them.
My 6.0 VXR (Vauxhall-badged or not) is fantastic...
Get an immaculate Citroen Saxo VTS cheap and spend £2k on a decent de-cat. exhaust system, a good cold-air set-up and a re-map.
These cars are easy to get cheaply and the mods. above will get you 150bhp, instead of the standard 130.
You will then be quicker than most hatches.
My son has just ordered a Trophy. He has been running a 1988 5GT that I renovated, for a couple of years now.
I have no doubt that the Trophy will be a great car and top value compared to the competition.
Value please, for the above car, which has to be one of the best there is still on the road.
It is numbered about 80 from the last one they built, has a tiny 37K miles from new and full service history with one owner. Probably one of the very best standard cars left in existence.
Resides in...
Many publications are great in their own way.
I subscribe to 6 magazines and all are enjoyable.
Test Drive, Evo, Car, Autocar, Auto Express and Diesel Car.
The new Clio Trophy would dump on an ancient old Williams from a very big height. Anyone who cant see that probably lives somewhere surrounded by cuckoos...get real.
(Or join the Morris Minor fanatics who probably think their cars are still as fast as modern machinery too...)
The newest 182...
With respect, a well-ridden Ducati, say a 999, would murder a Clio 182, in the corners and especially on the straights, where it has but 2 cylinders and under 1000cc, but has similar 0-170 as a top Ferrari or Lamborghini and handles brilliantly.
Well I am still here, after around 250,000 miles on motorcycles.
I agree, you are more vulnerable on a bike but you also fit into a smaller space and there is less of you to hit. You are also a lot quicker getting out of trouble than in a car.
The Atom also costs three times what the Suzuki did.
My Suzuki details.

Did anyone else spot the brilliant showing of the Clio 182 Cup this week?
0-60 in 6.49, slaughtering the Fiesta ST150 and Colt turbo.
0-100 in 16.74.
Overall time, 21.42, over 4 and a half seconds better than the Ford.
550bhp and 400ft lbs is a strange combination on an EVO engine!
405/355 was the factory FQ 400 outputs and most aftermarket-tuned 400 bhp EVOS and SCOOBYS have 400 ft lbs too.
550bhp would normally bring 500 torque.
