This will be what's causing the limp mode, most probably the signal from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body has weakened or is intermittent, probably best to borrow one off someone else's car for a day to see if it fixes it before you commit to buying a replacement throttle body.

You could try swapping the HT leads round, as in use one from a cylinder that still fires.

It also had less warning lights than a 172.

It will definitely fit, only difference is the earlier ones are speedo drive, but your 182 runs the speedo from the hub so both speedo and non speedo drive boxes will work on your car.
