Without history, i'd be taking the mileage as a pinch of salt, unless MOT's back it up obviously. That said, £1800 is top money for a Ph2 172 unless it's a real low-mile minter. I'd say anywhere near £1k is a good price for you.
@Knuckles is the Mk3 man around here. He has one in the same colour as yours too!
I'm sure an exhaust specialist will be able to repair it, rather than replace.

What's the reason for a new engine? Your current one failed, or looking to freshen it up?
Seems a bit mental to buy a new engine, if your car is a silver 182 as per your avatar...
I have this one, and it works perfectly on just about everything i've tried it on.

There's always good condition used parts for sale for pennies. Think @R-Sport Cars LTD have some 182 shocks that have done less than 1k miles for sale..
They've made hard work of that TBH. If it's the front ones, you can get a swan neck spanner into the top of the bolt. If it's rears, you can get a spanner on them also.
Meh, as long as the car comes back right, no problems for £40.
Release bearing, yep.
The shiny silver part taps into the flywheel of the car, then you use the blue tool to align the clutch plate. You can do it by eye pretty easily, but the tool makes it pretty simple.
I would go with:
Engine oil for top ups
Coolant as above
Pads front and rear,
HT leads, coilpack, injector or two.
Fuses.
I wouldn't buy the best quality, known working used parts would do me OK.
From my limited exposure, they're all much of a muchness. It seems to be mainly about branding and aesthetics.
the missus' parents have a Bose Soundlink, and it's not bad.
