I never got to drive on track with the cooksports as they were fitted to the daily so couldn’t comment. Never liked them on the road tbh. I can only assume people would fit such a spring to lower the car slightly and firm up the ride. But in terms of ride and comfort Cup springs and dampers are...
Turned my attention to the daily which has been off the road for 3 weeks now with very noisy front wheel bearings.
Managed to pick up a pair of nice hubs with new bearings from @FPummell.
They were pretty well prepared against corrosion but had a few paint chips here and there so I added a...
Another cold one tightening the last few bolts on the track car and giving everything a good check over.
Fired her up and was greeted by a chattering sound coming from the flywheel area.
My first thoughts were it may be something coming from the clutch area. It’s got a brand new Sachs...
Definitely not that as that was my original suspicions and the clutch is functioning as it should. Everything is brand new in there except clutch which as I said is half a day old. There’s obviously some damage to the clutch which isn’t apparent on first inspection.
I’ll send it back to Sachs...
The bearing tube guide came loose at Croft so I replaced that.
While everything was out I checked the new Sach Racing Clutch with less than half a days trackwork and all seemed ok. On start up there’s like a rattle which at first appeared to come from the box but when you get underneath the car...
Pro-kit or Sportlines? People often get the 2 mixed up. Pro-kit are OEM equivalent and really nice. Had them on a couple of cars and they’re still a comfortable ride for daily use. I’d go this route if I couldn’t get original cup springs for the daily.
Sportlines are the much lower track version.
Spent the last 3 weekends freezing my nuts off taking my gearbox out, replacing broken parts, refurbishing the subframe and putting it all back together thinking it was fixed. Something still not right with it so it’s all got to come back out again. I could quite easily break it or put it up...
Yeah that's just the problem, racing is addictive and expensive. The company i work for have a rally team and compete in the BTRDA with a few WRC cars, so i've been involved in that from a marketing stand point for the last 20 years. I've also sponsored a lot of grass roots motorsports like...
When I bought my first 182 FF it had lowering springs - Yellow Apex - with worn out dampers. It was awful to drive, very bouncy and crashy.
I bought some new cup dampers and have tried Cooksport and Grams, but although they’re light years ahead of those Apex springs, they’re still a bit crashy...
Managed to get the subframe back in the track car along with some new Powerflex steering bushes.
The cold and wet got in my old bones though, so had to call it a day. 🥶🌧👴🏻 Just a few bolts to torque up and that’s the track car fixed.
Good progress today getting the new thrust bearing guide in and torqued up. 25Nm for anybody who may be looking to do theirs.
Cleaned up some of the brackets while the box and subframe was out. On the rusty parts I used Bilt & Hamber Hydrate-80 then gave them a few coats with a rattle can...
I stick some rice in mine with a bit of warm soapy water. Give it a good shake and it comes up like new. The first time i cleaned it it was green. Do the same with my coolant reservoir.
Bitterly cold weekend removing the subframe and the gearbox from the track car but needs must. 🥶
The back story is the car developed a rattling/grinding sound at Croft in the afternoon just as I was pulling out of the garage and onto the pit lane. It sounded so bad i immediately stopped the...
Setups like that work really well. I know his name is mud to some, but Carl Wadeson aka @bloke did my Group N timing on my 182 track car before it went off to EFi for mapping. Carl booked everything in advance, so it worked out very well for me.
Just remembered that AMAC Engineering in Northallerton did some work on my mates Clio 182 engine. He races in the Trackday Trophy and was impressed with his work. Car ran great all last season, so might be worth reaching out to him?
Watching with interest as i'm also up in North Yorkshire and have been looking at getting their entry level rebuild for my daily 182. Heard only good things. Such a shame we don't have something like this up North.
Whilst I have a few days off over Christmas I thought I’d try my hand at electroplating.
I have a few bolts under the bonnet that I’d like to save, in particular the 4 x M10 bolts that secure the top engine mount. I have tried alternative ones but can’t find any decent 33mm washers thick enough...
Given it was now Christmas I decided to order a 120a inline fuse with a circuit breaker from Amazon. I plan on doing a neater job in the new year, but at least this is a safe option.
Gobsmacked how many people on the Facebook groups suggesting soldering the old fuse as a permanent solution. How...
So now we have a fully charged battery and a refurbished starter motor with good connections. Out with the multi-meter.
My first job was to check the fused cable link from the starter to the battery. Bingo! The inline fuse had blown. Just to confirm this I rigged up a bit of battery cable and...
Pre Christmas drama’s when the Clio decided not to crank, although giving the fused link cable to the starter a wiggle helped get it going. Time to investigate.
My track car suffered similar issues which turned out to be a corroded spade connector.
On further inspection I noticed the starter...
Day off today to bring the track car home and start winter preparation for next season.
I’m so blessed to have great knowledgeable people I can fall back on, but so many things went wrong this year, many out of my control to be fair, that I’m going to stop relying on others and dive into some...
My mates have the Clio 182 which is road legal but more track focussed. They're going EPAS and have bought the new PMS A/C delete kit with the 6PK PAS pulley kit after loosing the PAS Pump at Croft a few months back. The new PMS kits are very good though, nice and light and feel solid, but i'm...
