Clio 172 Cup
Cant for the life of me understand how you think a MK2 Clio has a lack of grrr but then prefer the VTR...and Ive purposely chose the thinnest front-on...
I hated it at first but I love it now. I usually use one of two options available to me, both are satisfying in their own way...
1) The simple option, just use a bit of power and say goodbye. I joined a roundabout in front of a 106 cruise last weekend, just driving at my normal pace I was well...
Tailgate would like nice, although at the same time I swear some people think I have a new colour coded Extreme with an RS badge as its amazing what people will try to "challenge" you in (I found myself pulling out right into the middle of a 106 cruise last Sunday, was amusing to say the least)...
I can probably guess the general response to this but its worth a shot.
I have some spare 172 Cup badges (and before anyone asks, Im keeping some spare incase I need them so they arent going on EBay or being sold here) and decided to tack them on to various places on the car to see how they...
If I try hard I can squeeze 40 out of my Cup, but 35ish is average. Flying round South Wales for the weekend (500 miles at an average speed of 54mph) I still managed about 35mpg if I remember correctly, which tied up with petrol useage too.
I commute on weekdays as well which is hellish...
Havent seen any change in MPG (36 usually) but I swear the engine has a slightly better note to it now since I fitted the ITG. Probably imagining things but it does sound better.
If you really go to town like RS-Steve though I think it becomes ok again, makes it look like a rally car or something. I remember someone spending a fortune getting full WRC decals for their Evo from Japan, is that "chav"?
Somewhat ironically the only negative comments Ive got about my car...
Do I need to by Elf 5w40 to keep my warranty valid? I cant find the stuff anywhere (apart from the Renault dealer, not cheap!) but Castrol 5w40 is available everywhere.
I want to supply my own oil for my service but want to make sure I get the right stuff.
What a car! In the flesh the Trophy looks bloody magnificent. Anyways, "Wxxx WRC" parked up near a Lliad Blue V6 at Platinum Renault Trowbridge, I assume its some lucky buggers new delivery.
Worringly though, my other half took one look at the exterior, one look at the seats and then seriously...
I, somewhat unbelievably, have had 6 completely happy, trouble free years of Renault motoring, my first car was a 1996 Clio RN, took that one beyond 100k without any hint of trouble, my second car was a new 2003 Clio Dynamique, also solid but didnt keep it long. Now I have a 53 plate 172 Cup...
Platinum Renault in Trowbridge, Wilts have a silver 172 Cup for sale at the moment. Never liked them in photos but damn is it nice, the paintwork compliments the Turinis so well.
Sadly its £9k (!) on a 53 plate with 23k covered, bargain!
Next March will be the odd time where 182s will have long gone, and the new RS Clio will be heading our way. The new RS Clio will be bigger, heavier, comfier etc so people may want the good ol little rocket and be willing to pay for it. Who knows?!
Does anyone know how much I should be paying if I ordered two front Contisports direct through Renault? I have a service coming up so if I could get it all done at once it would be helpful
Or even better, does anyone know the best place to get them? I assume Renault wont be the cheapest but...
I have a Cup and use it to commute to work every day as well as "weekend fun", its bloody fantastic. I nearly bought a full fat 172 without ever seeing a Cup close up in the flesh but thankfully it fell through, I say thankfully because as soon as I saw the Cup I fell in love, looks so so much...
Oddly enough FancyPlates allow you to add small text under the numberplate with the Standard UK plate constructor, which they say are "suitable for use on UK public roads and will pass any MOT/PSV tests"
The DVLA have the most accurate info...

I believe the "logo" has to be either the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George or Red Dragon to be legal, Ive never read anything to suggest something such as the Renault diamond is actually legal. And no honeycombing or other logos/pattern can be present in the background either...
I went with Anthracite instead of black and that seems to hide debris much better. I never realised how dirty they had got until I pulled them out yesterday and gave them a good shake.
Saying that I wouldnt have bought them if I knew they would get really messy as it was a lot to spend...
I have no trouble getting 40mpg (trip computer and confirmed with petrol usage) if I need to out of my Cup. Dont exactly have to take it easy, I did a weekend around South Wales covering 450 miles at an average speed of 54mph and managed 37mpg.
Cruising between 70 and 90(ish) on the Motorway...
They do take a long time to come (was the quoted 28 days) but are worth the wait, I got custom fronts, rears and a bootmat, cant remember what they cost all together but somewhere up near £100 I think. Some little images of mine here...

The twin tailpiped 850kg 150bhp RenaultSport Twingo (!?) will be the spiritual successor to the 172/182, the size of the new Clio is pushing it out of supermini territory, in keeping with nearly all cars that end up growing up with their owners (think Golf, then Polo, then Lupo)
Its been discussed a lot but I still cant remember the name of the problematic bit, need to write it down as I have a service soon and want it sorted.
Front strut mount or something? Mine only does it on full lock over bumps, quite noisy though.
Evo - subscribe. The only magazine that I can literally read cover to cover without skipping anything due to lack of interest, takes me a few days to get through it.
Autocar is ok but a bit expensive for a weekly, I get it ocassionally. Fortean Times is my only other magazine purchase, but its...
1. The fact that its so smooth and civilised at 30mph, for example when being hounded/tailgated by chavs in built up areas, and then the fact that 30-70 it completely destroys them when the roads open up.
2. The fact that it still sort of looks like a normal Clio, which suprises the hell out...
It is/was about £26k if I remember rightly, its gone again now I think so I cant check (it seems to alternate between Bath and Trowbridge), according to the advert its on 1000 miles, but its said that for months and Ive seen it out and about a fair bit so it must have done more now.
I did see...
