Had my cambelt slip a couple weeks back. Been researching everything since then.
Spoke to dan@sjm who was very helpful and mentioned most of the time the valves bend and a new head/engine required. Signs that the aux had frayed, catching in the crank pulley, resulting in the slip.
To cut a...
Do you mean get that notch between the two lines of '0'?
If I rotate the engine any more, it won't be at TDC. I'm 99% it's at max travel.
Crank won't budge either way. I'll triple check tomorrow, worst case I'll just have to crank it back to this position.
Thanks for the help anyhow.
Was going to post this to ask if this green mark was the TDC mark. Then I noticed the notch in the flywheel next to the green bit!
Cylinder 4 also at TDC - checked using screw driver method.
For anyone that needs some help that's come across this post, see image!
P.s yours may not have...
Can I just double check. The only visible mark that was on the flywheel was a bit of green paint? Is that what I was looking for? Or is it a physical slot as you say?
Right can't use flywheel method as engine in still in the car.
If I get cylinder 3 (assuming right to left is 1-4) to TDC the crank pin will not locate until after TDC and traveling back down.
Hi quick question.
If the timing is out on a car, how do I make sure the crank pin is in the right slot in the flywheel? (yes I know usually if it's out the valves are fucked etc etc.)
Guide States to go by the horizontal cam slots. But if the timing is out, how can I be sure it's not going...
Thanks. It can be difficult sometimes when you haven't got the technical knowledge or indeed someone to guide you that you know.
Sometimes you just have to dig in and give it your best. Especially when your only other option is to spend £1200 on a new engine... Kinda makes you want to learn it...
Thanks all sorted now!
By the way whilst I appreciate your help, comments like 'if you got stuck there, you shouldn't be doing it at all' really knock confidence.
Just FYI doesn't help. How else do people learn? I know the risks.
Well they're mainly metal with a plastic/rubber section in the middle.
The ones that allow you access to fit Renault camshaft locking tool (horseshoe type)
Thanks gents.
The car has to stay here. And it has to be done so it looks like it's going up one way or another. Just need to make it as safe as possible.
I'll have a chat with my mate when I see him.
I've got axle stands to go under. It's only cambelt/dephaser work.
I'd planned on jacking high enough to get a large slab under each chassis rail, with the Axle stands positioned on those.
I need to Jack my car up on a surface that is made up of chippings and duff.
First time the trolley jack sunk into the ground and just kept sinking with more and more weight on it. Had to take the wheels and clean the bearings as they were full of Crap.
Tried spreading the load with a piece...
Yeah but my dilemma is that I'm not sure whether to fix and sell, fix and use or just sell as is.
If it was fixed first, the belts et al would be fresh.
Otherwise Yeah you're right, it makes zero difference if sold as is.
Really not in a position to break as I just don't have the time...
Trying to decide between fixing car or selling as is;
53' clio cup blue
77k
Powder coated turinis (front two curbed slightly)
Apex springs lowered 20mm
Massive amounts of service receipts
Cambelt just done
New standard exhaust
Rear brakes recent refurb
Needs new front discs and pads...
Just an update. Car is back now, spot on Dan and The Fatty. Cambelt slipped and has damaged internals for one or maybe two cylinders. The suspect item that I saw in my rear view may have caused the damage as there doesn't seem to be anything missing from the engine bay. Guess I'll never know...
Post just disappeared!
High rpm, doing around 70mph.
Belt flew out under car, aux belt still attached (but almost broke too).
Massive engine noise, sounds like a diesel, low power.
Cambelt and dephaser 'apparently' changed 14k miles ago. No fitting receipt, only receipt for parts (lesson...
Currently sitting in my car waiting for RAC recovery.
90% sure cambelt just gone. Pretty unsure where to go from here.
Thought I'd post here to see if anyone else has had this happened. Engine rebuild? Claim on insurance?
Thanks
I've just fitted the powerflex kit, but I'm having trouble getting the sub frame side to line up right. It's as if it's too sort. Can't push the engine because there's too much resistance in the bushes now.... Urhhhh all fun and games eh...
Anyone with any ideas?
