Only if they are in your friends list. Some people arrange races with forum communities etc so for them it makes sense to post a access code for people to join rather than have a need for them to be added as friends beforehand. You get the best of both worlds so it's not really a problem.
You can use a code or click on a friends name to access a online room. The code would be handy if you want to meet up with a group of people who are not all on your friends list.
Follow the link found here for the Facebook app and send 5 grudge match invites to any of the randoms that are listed and then check the GT Profile option of the FB app for the codes to be used in the PSN Store.

The car physics and control are excellent and if I can ever get online with good clean racers then that is what will definitely keep me coming back to the game long term. For me the driving experience in GT5 is less arcadey than F3 and more sim based.
New patch incoming 01.12.10
* More physical damage to axles, bringing leaning to left/right
* Damage in arcade mode
* Reduce the minimal framerate dips
I finally completed the annoying Top Gear Lotus race last night.
I bought a playseat for use with my pedals and that cost far more than the wheelstand pro which unfortunately was not available at the time I made my purchase.
I agree, the wheel is fantastic in this game. I wish I had one for use in Forza 3 as I never played it often because I found with the pad the cars felt very arcadey.
I briefly tried the PS3 Eye and it worked and allowed me to look around the car but I found it caused me to crash due to the odd nature of turning your head but keeping your eyes on the screen. Didn't mess around with the settings though which may make it better.
Lots of things. Turbo units, suspension, air intake, tyres, brakes, remapped ecu, exhaust, lighter bodywork & windows, fully adjustable gearbox and several other adjustments.
