The steering turn-in on the Willy being less sharp than the VTS could be due to a worn bottom rubber on the steering column next to the UJ (absolutely guaranteed unless its been replaced or welded!).
I used to own a Valver (then a Williams) and looked at about half a dozen 106 GTis before deciding they werent for me.
The Clio Mk1 is a bigger car than the 106 and you really feel the extra cabin space. You can find Valvers with leather too - much more supportive and higher quality than...
Id have to be the one to say it, but you can get a tidy Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo for £5,000. Its a five-star rated car and I dont think you can find a faster or more stylish car for the money. In effect, I did a straight swap for my 1993 Williams for a 1999 20V Turbo, plus £450 left over! :o...
Dai - mines on 65k with the cambelt change not done. I think the price of £4.8k I paid for it reflects that and it seems to be in very good nick otherwise. Its Sprint Blue.
Interestingly, the 20VT is faster than the Cossie clan in standard form.
Ill get some pics up soon - not taken any yet!
Theres a 50bhp 1.1 verision of the Mk1, Phase1 Clio. This engine was mainstream in the rest of Europe, but was only found in the "Night & Day" special editions over here.
The lowest power Mk2 is the 60bhp 1.2 8v unit, which is still found in the very base models of the current range.
I sold my Williams recently and am picking up a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo tomorrow - so I think Im fairly qualified to comment on the two!
I originally looked into the 20VT last summer when Id sold my Valver, but the teenage dream of owning a Williams and prohibitive insurance put it on the back...
I would have it serviced once a year. The thing about lower mileage cars is that their mileages are often run up on short trips, which accelerates oil degradation.
If youve done 8.6k already, youre probably on course to do 12k by October and Id change the oil then if nothing else. IMO a year...
Enid - while still doing my best to be modest, Willy No. 123 was a rare find for Dave and Id be prepared for a long wait if you want another Willy 1 in similar condition. The good news is that people tend to sell in the summer; the bad news is that they get more expensive then too.
Most of the Mk1s had a service (i.e. oil change) at 6k for petrols and 5k for diesels. The latest Mk2s have them every 18k for mainstream models. My mum and bro picked up a 1.2 Dynamique the other day and were told 18k miles, to which I said but what about oil degredation? Seems thats not an...
All I can say is watch out exotic cars when it does become second nature! Nothing else I know of can cover my local B-roads so quickly or with such ability.
Glad you like the car - its a peach.
A Williams 2 would be on an M-plate for certain. Any Williams on an L-plate would be one of the original 390 Williams (know as Williams 1) and would have a plaque on the dash. Sounds suspect. I would check it for you on the national register, but its down at the moment.
A Willy would have...
Adam - the 3.0 Alfa was well and truly on my list until I saw the prices. There are very few for less than £7,500.
Aaron - I dont doubt for a moment the relative track/B-road abilities, but the chassis is actually very well regarded and you may have been by far the better driver. Ive...
The Alfa GTV is a great car and it looks like my mate will be getting one. However, you have to pay about £3-4k more for an equivalent GTV 3.0 over a Fiat 20V Turbo, as well as stomaching higher fuel bills and slightly less performannce.
Lucky you Rennie! Wish I had enough dosh to run two five star cars like you! :o
As per first post, Ive secured a nice 20V Turbo locally, which is incredible because theyre almost as difficult to find as a Williams. It does need the legendarily expensive cambelt change, but Ive had a decent...
Hope you have as much pleasure out of No 123 as I did Dave.
I forgot to give you the airbox on Saturday - Ill post it to you soon. Knew Id forgotten something!
You seem to know a lot about them Jim...*uneasy laugh*:(.
Ive managed to find a local Fiat/Alpha specialist, so hopefully that aspect wont be so bad - I actually used to take my 16V and then Williams to a garage 60 miles away from me. The running costs are actually similar to a Williams if my...
Yes, the attention the Williams would have got in central Bristol was a reason for selling, but the main one was the miles Im doing - even when I cycle and take the train for the most part! The options were to either use the Willy as a second car or to sell it and get something more suitable...
