I have just done some research and it would make sense that the bearings in the idler pulley could have gone. Coz they have tightened it, it would make sense that it is being tempermental. Does this sound about right?

Not sure of cost but you will be able to claim back through council/highways agency. I know if you go over a pot hole and damage the car you can claim back.

i have a 2002 172 which has done 36k miles. Once it has warmed up the engine makes a knocking/tapping noise from the engine bay. The sounds is coming from the side where the oil filer cap is (left hand side, next to the belt). Any ideas to what this could be? Shaw
