Erm, I thought there was more modding opportunity with a GT Turbo lump. You cant exactly whack up the boost on a 16V after a few select mods!
People always ask if they can do an engine transplant and the answer is always yes. But it will not be as cheap, long or short run, as just buying a...
Ive used loads of oils and never notice the difference. It was Halfords 10w/40 that went in my Valver last time as it was half price! Not the best oil, but Id say that changing it frequently is more important than a little variation in the quality of oil. Besides, I wont buy a product from...
Oh yeah, I hammer the sh*t out of my 16V at times and it just comes back for more - although the electrics are always going south. I guess Id forgotten that just because the 172 is newer that its more reliable.
But it will have a warranty. I have my Haynes manual and my intuition!
I would try to hang on to the Williams if I were you. For all the great points of the 172, it ultimately isnt a limited edition homologation special.
Naturally, the 16V/Willy series are ten years old now and dont offer their performance coupled with reliability. Thats where the 172/Cup...
Mileage isnt the issue Id say, as they mainly seem to get the problems from about 60-80k miles. But then again, people always sell their car for a reason...
Read the 1994 Cars & Car Conversions article on the Williams on the main Cliosport site (under articles!). That outlines the Group A...
Any of the normal (i.e. non-wide arch) Clio models that were specd with ABS had the four-bar torsion beam system fitted as they could take rear discs, which the ABS system came with. Must have been a very expensive option!
Just get handy with the star keys and take it apart. Theres always a reson for the squeak and you have to remember that the car is probably ten years old!
Nick - sorry to confirm that Im actually a Renault dork! Thats all off the top of my head! I seem to have an amazing ability to soak up irrelevant crap (maybe thats why I got my 1st?!).
In brief:
May 1991: Clio 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 1.9d available with various trims including RT and Baccara (luxury).
November 1991: 16V released. Homologated version of RenaultSports Group A rally car.
Early 1993: Williams introduced as homoplgated version of RenaultSports new 2.0 rally...
Willy has a 34mm wider front track courtesy of different offset 7J Speedline wheels (6.5J Speedline Vega on 16V Phase2) and longer 19 16V front lower wishbones. The Willy uses different shocks/springs to the 16V, though retains the braking system (apart from extra rear bias on the bias valve)...
Why not go for an early Megane 2.0 Coupe bottom end? That engine is also the 2.0 F7R unit and the bottom end is almost identical to the Williams one.
You can slap it straight in and use the 16V head no problems. It will also be more common and cheaper at scrappies than the Willy engine...
AFAIK, the ratios are the same in the Valver and Willy, apart from 5th. Its the lower rev limit that makes the Willy reach slower speeds in all the gears bar 5th.
I once had a comedy race with a Mk2 Phase2 1.2 16v Dynamique, who thought that because my car says "16V" on the side that it was a 1.2 or something. Otherwise, Clio people always know what it is.
The bottom ends on F7P/R series engines are as tough as old boots. Id be very happy to buy a 16V with 105k on the clock - knowing that some of the fastest and most powerful Valvers (BenJ, AaaronC, mine:oops:) all have over 100k on the clock. For every horror story of high mileage Valvers...
