The manual can take up 2 400bhp, the auto not much over standard so the cars with 600bhp must be modified big time

Well theres an easy answer for that. To make the car look better than it is. Still doesnt really answer the question though mate cos the confusion was that with all these add ons theyre quite close on price so why dont they get M3s in the first place?
