There's rarely any benefit solely upgrading the motherboard in any scenario - why do you need to? Not sure why you need an extra PCI-E slot, for what? If you need a new GPU, upgrade that instead of crossfire etc. I'd say you never want to upgrade the mobo without upgrading the CPU personally...
