I would of changed the lambda but those readings are okay, and if a catalyst had failed it would be noticable when driving and the other readings would be out too wouldn't they?
The coilpack is giving a spark though, to the lead going to that plug.... Would that illiminate the coilpack or not?
I shall try some leads and change the coilpack over as well and see whats what, any other ideas greatly appreciated.
Could it perhaps be an exhaust valve or something?
Done that as well today, with it disconnected it still runs the same.
One thing I did notice was that when you disconnect the lead from the coilpack with the engine running (on cyl.3) the engine sounds the same, which suggests its not doing much. There is a temporary drop in revs but the engine...
Plugs changed 2 days ago, leads all checked and working correctly and the coilpack is also working fine.
However plug 3 looked quite black in comparison when changed. New plugs did not make any real difference to how the car behaves. :(
But that does not explain why the hydrocarbons were high, I had it retested today and the car was hot - really hot engine wise had been on an hour drive. Yet the HC level was sky high. :(
Had my car checked today, and found that the hydrocarbons are really high. The car has a very slight misfire at idle which I put down to being a charactaristic of the 172 but perhaps this is more serious.
When driving the car seems fine, and has no misfires or hesitation in any gear but at...
So do you guys also think the hydrocarbons advice was wrongly given? At cold would they be very high?
Obviously the 2nd graph was slightly higher bhp wise, torque was about the same.
Here is the graph from the first run... I have just noticed that the torque was actually about 140 ft.lb from what I can make out. Apologies, I thought it was higher but having opened my eyes this time, its less but still a good graph I would say....
I do have a graph, but sadly on of the first run as I forgot to pick up the print out of the second run, but it is very smooth with no dodgy flat spots or low points throughout the rev range. I will get it scanned in tomorrow and posted up. :)
The dyno run was carried out locally at Alan...
Is 164 good? Should they not be 170 standard I've not long had my clio and love it to bits already - its so much fun, but I got worried today and saw pound signs light up in front of me when he said hydrocarbons were so high - but like I said they did check them from relatively cold.
When the car is running, if you unplug the map sensor what should happen to the car? As on my ph1 172 if you unplug the connector the car does not do anything. Is this normal?
Thanks.
And the result was okay I guess for a ph1 standard 172 with 100k miles.
155bhp with 156 ft.lb torque (1st run) then 164bhp with 155 ft.lb torque (2nd run).
I did ask them to also give their oppinion about the slight misfire at idle which they tested on the gas analyser and the hydrocarbons were...
So it is usual at very low revs/idle that the engine sounds like it is slightly misfiring? The new plugs seem to have made an improvement this morning but the cold start issue (seperate problem) is still there. Think that must be the idle control valve as the car just dies if you rev the engine...
Yeah I dont think its your injectors, I did run a whole big bottle of redex injector cleaner with a full tank too which may have helped but who knows...lol
Fingers crossed for you, hopefully the plugs will sort your problem too. :-) let me know if they do or not, also check all your vacuum hoses on the inlet/throttle body etc.
I would check the exhaust itself the cat and the heatshield on the bulkhead too, if it always goes away when warm it would indicate it's a component rather then a shield etc.
I used a set of Bosch super 4 plugs which was all I could get but they seem to have made a big improvement may also change the leads too as it's got some beru ones fitted which I think are GSF leads.

I took the plugs out and one was very black the rest looked ok but weren't brilliant so put some new ones in, car still idles a bit lumpy but I've been told that most 172 clios do that due to the cams used, but in general response is much improved as is smoothness so fingers crossed the problem...
172 phase1 has got idle control valve.
Today however, after having a good look around the engine bay I found a small pipe that goes from one part of the inlet to the bottom of the throttle body, this pipe was not connected to the throttle body directly under the jubilee clip holding the intake...
I sprayed it with some carb cleaner and I think it helped a bit, but its really bad from cold, before and after the cleaner I was thinking maybe the idle control valve?
Got a small problem with my ph1 172, the engine starts fine but if you go to move of, the idle drops to low and the car cuts out, the same happens at traffic lights and junctions until the car has warmed up a bit.
Any ideas what could be the problem? Thanks.
Yep belt, tensioner and pump done at 85k (on 103k) and done 2 years ago.
Full folder with lots of receipts for all of servicing as well.
For a car that they only made 60 of - and can be sorted out and still keep the total cost under £2k I think that is well worth it. :)
Picked up a phase1 172 today, the car drives nicely however I have a misfire at idle. I know they idle lumpy as standard but the car does have a very slight misfire at the same time however when driving in any gear - no misfire. Could it be that when the engine was steam cleaned its got dampness...
I went back to the dealer (selling the car in the first picture) and said i had been before, and not been impressed as it needed a few bits doing to it but would be interested if the price was right considering it wasn't half as bad as the one I had seen earlier today in Wales (THE worst 172 I...
I actually went to see this car myself, and also noticed the things you picked up on... Perhaps we need a section on the forums where people can ask others locally to go and view cars on their behalf before they travel big distances and spend loads on trains etc.
Sorry to hear the bad news bud...
