There was also a Phase 3 one, near as damn it the same as the P2 but with a few minor tweaks like crystal headlamps & fogs, larger rear spoiler, some silver interior detailing, etc... not as massive change like the P1 to P2.

Nah, you want the rare phase 1 model that basically weighs the same as a Rallye but has some of the toys.
You dont get stuff like aircon, auto wipers, loads of airbags, etc... but you still get leather & electrics, so the ideal model.
I had a Rallye, then a 172 Cup, then a CTR and now a...
Practice will actually make a lot of difference... its all in the start...
First time I ran my Cup at Santa Pod was USC 2 years ago, it was about 3 weeks old with 1200 miles on the clock, standard, not stripped, camping gear & coolbox in the boot and got 15.0secs
In what way!?
Tell us exactly what you want help with and we can advise... Ive owned a Clio 172 Cup, a 306 Rallye and a GTi-6 so am in a good position to help.
Thats becuase Peugeot specifically tuned this engine for it...
The old Mi16 is a very peaky unit, almost as powerful but needs keeping on the boil and lacks low end grunt, wheras the GTi-6 lump has a very wide spread of power but theres less of a change when it comes on cam.
Some good info...
I went from a 306 Rallye to a 172 Cup and the Clio was positively luxurious compared to the 306!
They are really stripped, the Cup is quite well specced really, yet a bigger weight saving!?
Thats a myth... I can get 37mpg on a run and mid/upper 20s on my regular weekly commute, not much worse than my 172 Cup was and better than my CTR.
If you drive them hard everywhere though they do drink!
In my old 172 Cup I got...
Standard & camping gear in boot / 1200 miles = 15.0 @ 91mph at Santa Pod
Pipercross Viper & no rear seats / 3500 miles = 14.5 @ 93mph at York
