No it doesnt have to be welded, you can actually stuff a load of resin stuff like TigerSeal into the joint and let it harden, i know someone who has done that and its been fine so far (5000 miles i think).
But welding is the option that you know will last forever.
Drivers footwell, underneath the black plastic boot where it goes through the bulkhead.
Pull the boot of and you will see it, and yes it can be welded in situe, just watch out you dont set light to the carpet :D

Sure one of the sensors hasnt been left unconected?
Doesnt need topping up. Squeaky wheel? are you sure the auxilary belt that powers the power steering isnt a bit undertensioned?
Turn the car on from cold and full lock it and it will squeal if it is. It shouldnt when the car is warmed up however.
They fit indeed, but i have been told they leave a small open gap where the bell housing doesnt quite meet to the engine.
However this is not a problem and you can still fit em fine.
