Sounds like the gearboxes on 172s are pretty weak by the sounds of all the people complaining about em.
Try changin the gearbox oil Rhys, might be able to do it yourself but not sure where the fill up thing is on 172s.

I paid £48 for the top mount and £17 for the dogbone. never changed the other one. is loads better though/ £130 sound a bit steep, but then again I didnt buy mine from Ren.
Mate, dont tell em! if ur worried about the engine number rip the f**ker off. its only held on with 2 rivets. put your original one on or just none at all.
Doubt an insurance company will rip the engine apart and measure internal component sizes lol.

dont worry mat. if the worse comes to the worse its buggered, just get a set of 16v dials or find someone who has a set thats buggered but the rev counters ok. then just take the dial out and fit the other. you need to take the needle off and...
