Agreed. I only do it in first gear cos you get there so quickly, after that I shift up at about 7,500 rpm or there abouts. I think the engine falls of cam at around 6,800 rpm?
abbs_172: The engine implications all come back to the warranty approval thing. eg its not a problem.
The diagnostic...
Ok this is nothing I havent said before:
The ECU makes the car much easier to drive in traffic. It is much stronger off the line on both crawl-away and hard launches.
The car is quicker in every situation now. 60 comes in around 6 seconds (tested twice with 50 miles of fuel in the tank, 2...
Ok I understand that now.
The point the AE guy was trying to make is that it is better to have discs that easily fit under your wheels rather than some huge items that almost touch the rims.
He said that in terms of performance, good cool air passing through the discs (because of the size of...
Well the disk is there for two main reasons:
Firstly to be scrubbed against by the pad, and secondly to disipate heat. During a discussion, an automotive engineer mentioned that the pad area accounts for ~80% of the braking performance, and the diameter of the disk only ~5%. I say they make no...
RobFenn: You have no idea what the ECU does since you own neither a Cup, nor the sports ECU for it. I dont care about figures, or whats needed to do this speed or that speed.
Time is a constant factor, it does not change from car to car, distort figures, or lie. If the car does 60 in under 6...
The car will do 40mph in first gear! That leaves only 20mph of work in second gear - so of course its under 6 seconds. You can hit 100 in 3rd so that 0-100 time must have dramatically decreased too.
It does mean better brakes are needed because you are carrying more speed at any given moment.
Im after some new brakes. The car was really well balanced in terms of handling, speed, and stopping. Now that I have the ECU the car does sub 6 sec 0-60 sprints and the stopping needs uprating too!
Im a big fan of the new Dynapack. Its like a combination between a rolling road and an engine dyno. The Dynapack bolts onto the wheel hubs of the car, thus eliminating the tyre pressure problem, and also things like wheel-spin.
After so much discussion people still think that a rolling road is a reliable method to compare power.
You could run your car, make 150bhp at the wheels, deflate the tyres by 5 PSI, run again, then loose about 20bhp. Thats just 1 variable!
There are to many variables to conclude this test...
Well the ECU does a lot more than just the engine management. It also manages airbags (172 has four, cup has 2), climate control (cup doesnt have it), rain sensitive wipers (cup doesnt have them). The list goes on. All these features are ECU-controlled and not implemented in the Cup ECU.
Im...
The ECU MUST be fitted by a Renault dealer or R-Sport themselves (like they did for me) for warranty approval!
They told me it didnt fit the standard 172. They are the ones who developed it, so I would have thought they would know more than anyone.
The exact cost all in all was £280.35.
You can contact them on 0208 540 9991. There is no website that I know of.
The performance they quote is around 5% increase in torque. I havent noticed any difference in fuel consumption yet, but have not driven it much since having it done.
Im sure...
I got it done at R-Sport this morning. Costed about £280.00 after VAT and labour.
I dont think the rolling road will do it justice and show just how good it really is. The throttle response is just something else!
Had the R Sport ECU fitted today. I was expecting little improvements here and there, but the results are much better than expected.
The car is really strong when pulling away (even just driving in traffic) and you dont have to rev the car loads just to get it moving now like you did before...
Your local dealer can order one and then fit it, or you can go to R-Sport (Wimbledon) like I am tomorrow because they have a few in stock now.
£198 + VAT (+fitting too i think which is about 1 hour).
For the last time the R Sport one has a full warranty.
I have spoken to R Sport loads. Do you think Id be putting it on my car tomorrow if it invalidated the warranty?
Well everything is comparative isnt it.
0-62 in 6.5 is quick for a car that costs very little, and has only a 2 litre NA engine.
0-62 in 6.5 is a lifetime to some of the cars I have been in though. I have been in some road-legal cars that do it in way under half that!
What I would say is...
RobFenn:
What do you expect a SuperChips can do that the R Sport ECU doesnt? More power? No!
The only reason it looks like SuperChips produce such good results is because a lot of the cars they produce chips for are turbocharged cars. They increase the boost levels on these cars and then...
<CORRECTION target="JJ172">
5% is not bugger-all. Youre right that you may not feel the bhp increase, but how is the drivability improved? Thats right - torque.
A flat-spot is an area where the engine seems a little dull compared to the other areas, so how are they going to improve...
BenR:
Well theory says that power will increase. Whether it does or doesnt show on the rollers isnt too much of an issue because I have never been one to go by rolling road figures for comparisins seeing as they are primarily a tuning aid.
Im sure the drivability will be improved, and Im...
Ok just for the record:
The item in question is NOT a chip - its an ECU. It REPLACES the one thats on the Cup.
The ECU gives a 5% increase in torque across the whole rev range which equates to mailto:181bhp@6250rpm">181bhp@6250rpm.
The ECU IS warranty approved.
The ECU does NOT fit the...
Oh and when you sober up ;), could you explain "the difference between theory and practice" with regards to the running lean business and what I have stated as my knowledge on engine management goes only a little further than that book does.
Im always interested to learn more.
