Ah, so you don't know if it was doing it before or not. You might have disturbed something whilst you were down there. Easier with some help, they can turn the knob from screen to floor whilst you see what is or isn't happening. Sounds like the directional flap to me. Sorry no pics though.

Check to see if the tubes that go to the footwell haven't been kicked off, and that the linkage is still connected. Upside down in the footwell job I'm afraid.
