    Roadkill

Evidently the mcm guys had some help to get so much done in so little time, but it was a shame that the roadkill car wound up being a bit half arsed in comparison imho. An alternator, power steering, proper torque converter and a diff would have made a huge difference The difference between...

    Heavy v light wheels...

Likely a gyro effect, same as what keeps motorcycles upright.

    Heavy v light wheels...

A few seconds? You're having a laugh! In a race, the winners and losers are separated by tenths if not hundredths and hes quoting 5 hundredths per 20-80 acceleration, which is maybe three times on an average circuit? 15 hundredths a lap is huge and he hasnt considered any saving under braking...

What's the problem with short shift kits?

So nothing to do with short shifts then? I know a guy who did three vauxhall F20s in a weekend once by winding third gear out through the side of the case, but that's not relevant to premature synchro failure due to using a short shift kit either 😂

What's the problem with short shift kits?

@NorthloopCup can confirm, but if you just like the feel of a shorted shift, the presence of one on your car wont cause the box to die on its own. Driving like a ham fisted oaf will, and a short shift allows you to do a quicker job of it. At the end of the day, the boxes are awful, so shift...

What's the problem with short shift kits?

On most cars the issue is that the excessive motion comes from wear and slop in the bushes, so when you fit a short shift, you wind up with less throw, but just as much play, which makes it feel horrible and causes you to miss gears. Always worth renewing the bushes etc before modifying the...

Hot hatch ownership; how much does it really cost?

Never mind a hire car, you could be driven for that

Hot hatch ownership; how much does it really cost?

No, absolutely agree! It's a nice situation to be in and you can clearly afford and enjoy it, but the raw numbers are :openmouth: Like I say though, it's probably not a whole lot worse than someone buying a 335i and doing 5k a year in terms of p/mile

Hot hatch ownership; how much does it really cost?

Indeed, new car costs sort of make sense on average annual mileage, but even something like that polo GTI deal that was on here, taken over 5k is eye watering for a garden ornament. On the other hand, the way you use cars is also bonkers to me, but whilst the costs are high, at least the per...

Hot hatch ownership; how much does it really cost?

Yeah it's the odd thing that depreciation happens with age, driven or not, so whilst the total clearly rises, the pence per mile figure is improved by more miles. This is why I can never fathom suffering the depreciation on a new car for 5k a year, but hey, it leaves plenty of good, low mileage...

Hot hatch ownership; how much does it really cost?

Ah, from the video I'd assumed it was three sets in addition to what came on the car. If you're managing 20k from a set on fairly soft tyres thats good going! I guess the torque vectoring is some marketing speak for ESP and applies the rear brakes to correct yaw? If so, it certainly explains the...

Hot hatch ownership; how much does it really cost?

In your exact situation? Nothing. In order to own a hot hatch and not spend 26k over three years? Many things! Certainly depreciation is a big one, 11k over three years is £305 a month before servicing which can be negated, but not if one of your requirements is a new car (unless you select...

    Decent gaskets for a 172?

Price isn't a factor in not being bloody stupid. The use of M6 bolts for the exhaust joint, the design of the rear hanger or putting the flange where no one can get to it are all unforgivable. The design of the dipstick, with a short tube, under the fuel rail protector, which is only there...

    Decent gaskets for a 172?

Indeed, but the parts bin should never have contained any of these parts :tongueclosed:

    Decent gaskets for a 172?

I've just been doing some reading and the utter contempt from my French POS is growing. They should have got it to handle nicely and then given it to the Germans to finish. There is literally nothing thats nicely designed on the entire car.

    Decent gaskets for a 172?

@JamesBryan Oh, so just clean up the faces and re-seal? What kind of sealant? I've not pulled that apart yet, but my blug bores were full of oil, so I assume its leaking (not sure where else it could have come from?) Cheers

    Decent gaskets for a 172?

Cheers @imprezaworks for the tag and @bloke for the links! The first two look spot on, but I dont need the lower gasket (from the lower inlet to the head) as that's still attached, but I do need the cam cover gasket, which for some reason I cant find on the website?

    Decent gaskets for a 172?

I need a cam cover gasket, the one for between the two halves of the inlet and the seal between the cam cover and the upper inlet. Anyone know of a decent mail order supplier? Cheers
