Well, my local Renault have confirmed it is the PAS pump. I put a long screwdriver onto it as well and can hear the noise magnified through the end of it. They have quoted......wait for it......over £650 for parts and labour to replace the pump and belt!! I'll be calling around tomorrow to get...

I thought so much, thanks Mark. Would a faulty PAS pump cause the slight whining noise even when idle and not moving the wheel? I am a bit of a noob but I imagine that the PAS pump/belt are still doing SOME work even when I am not steering, right?

Well the trouble is I don't know if it has become heavier. I only picked it up yesterday and it's felt the same since then, I just didn't notice any odd noises on the way home. Could the PAS pump cause the odd noise whilst idle as well?

I know this is a few months old now but I have the exact same issue. Picked up an 2004 182 today (my first Clio) and I have a whining noise when turning at low speeds or when turning the wheel whilst stationary. It also whines ever so slightly when stationary even if I am not touching the wheel...

I got one last year and come renewal my premium was almost double (from around 300 to 550). I got it down to 450 in the end.
