I just checked the original of the first shot at 100% and it does seem soft. Could be out of focus or unsteady hands? That lens will be sharp in the centre at f4. Try a test on a tripod with steady shot off, use 10 second timer and manually focus. If it's sharp start by adding in the variables...
Can't believe no one has mentioned they're under exposed;)
Tom a camera will always try and expose for 18% grey. What that means is overall the scene will be toned at 18% assuming 0% is pure white and 100% pure black. Snow scenes are mainly white so 18% grey will cause them to under expose. Try...
A little 'project' today to keep me from going stir crazy!

I zoomed in at the large size on flickr and the post directly to the left of the car is in focus as you would expect. I think its a trick of the eye at the smaller size!
Thanks Matt, the shot was literally an unprocessed raw file, it had such nice contrast and bokeh any editing I did only detracted from the image. Its such an impressively sharp lens when wide open but stopped down 2/3rds of a stop and its razor like!
Testing out my new 70-200 F2.8 on Sunday, might choose between one of these

Just love the sharpness and contrast of the deer shot wide open!

BMW one is great Scott, wasn't keen on the choice of foreground in the first set, a 'portacabin' style building wasn't doing it for me. Also if you divide 600 by your (full frame equivalent) focal length you will get the maximum exposure time so the stars don't trail. Not an issue on the BMW but...
Bully, its a 'walkaround' or travel lens. It goes from wideangle to long(ish) telephoto.
Its strength is its versatility and flexibility. Its weakness is it will be 'slow' and optically average.
Hi Tom the image is a little lacking in contrast and I would even say underexposed slightly.
If it were me I would go for a much closer 'macro' style shot and ensure everyone of those pins was 'perfect' - theres a few holes where pins haven't been pushed out enough. Add in some strong lighting...
Couldn't be that precise but f11 on a full frame is roughly equivalent to f8 on a crop body. 8 x 1.5 = 12.
F4 on my 2.7 x crop rx100 is 10.8 in full frame equivalent or f11!
Composition is excellent Scott, I would say the greens are too saturated and the darker tops of the hills show where the grad filters have been, I would return to same spot when is a tad lower and take differing exposures and then blend them in photoshop. Lots of potential though mate!
