Got up at crack of dawn this week to risk a sunrise near to where I was working.

Thanks Matt.
Well the dynamic range is there (more DR than a 5D mk3!) but the raw files are as flat as a pancake. The shadows can be extensively pulled. The above shot was taken with a 2 stop grad (cokin A-series) so exposure was correct but files do need a bit of work, unless you shoot jpeg...
I would even take another inch off the bottom of your first crop mate, its not about the steps, just the guy in the air and the amazed onlooker with open mouth!
I know a lot of people have been using higher f stop numbers f11-F22 to 'maximise' depth of field but at wider angles its really unnecessary and massivly reduces sharpness.
Have a play with the aperture on this test programm and see which apertures turn the optically superb canon 24-70 2.8 II...
Second one is the best Tom as you don't have that tell tale line in the purple paper.
Heres an idea, keep the shallow depth of field but bring the speaker forward and try and position it so the symbol is out of focus as it then looks like he's just hit it and it has some movement!
Yup:o
They actually look fine on my phone, solid blacks etc, maybe its the incrteased dynamic range of a latop screen or the angle its tilted at but yeah the shadows look quite blocky.
Thats nicely done mate, If I had to critique (and I do ;)) then I reckon you could have made more use of those lead in lines, perhaps a lower more angled viewpoint. Given the lighthouse is a bit rusty it may have looked better in silhouette if that could have been done from a long exposure...
Nice to see some daytime long exposures and some nice compositions, f22 will lead to the softness due to diffraction. But I know why you uses it! A 2 stop grad would have balanced the exposure nicely on the first and allowed f11.
The crops a bit tight at the top on 3. You had much calmer water...
