Ya it sounds like you've the same problem as the rest of us ! Your procedure's more or less right. Do check the position in the window on the bell housing though and make sure you use the Renault tool to lock the pulleys and NOTHING ELSE !
Given that so many people are suffering from this...
In terms of MAP sensors etc... I've swapped the MAP sensor a few times and it's not made any difference. You can pick them up second hand on eBay for about a tenner, so it's a cheap thing to try out and 'eliminate from your inquiries' if you're minded to do so. It's probably not worth it...
@jinjur So sorry for not dipping in here... notifications are no longer coming through on eMail to me and I was really busy with work. You seem to have done everything right and if your MAP reading is 400-500, you're fine. The F4R is a lumpy motor but there's certainly a difference between...
@jinjur One more thing before I jump off... just noticed a guy with a racing 172 on FB called Leslie Graham who has photos and footage of himself at Kirkistown. It would be worthwhile making contact with him to find out who does his engine work.

@jinjur Just to but into your's and @bloke 's conversation there. A few points :
o There are two Renault 'factory' pins. The one for the 2.0 F4R is quite specific and is a single bore cylinder from the handle to the end. There's another one produced by Renault that has two cylindrical bores...
@jinjur The racing guys I know use Martin Tracey (Westward Engineering) in Enfield Co. Meath. He does tuning and engine building and they highly recommend him. You can reach him at http://www.westwardeng.com. Hope that works out OK.
@jinjur The problem sounds identical to mine. I'll have an ask around some of the racing fraternity I still know back home in Ireland to see who they might be able to recommend to do it for you.
You're right, sorry. I ought to have said that the dephaser operation was as expected. Variable valve timing via cam phasing is not the same as the adjustable valve lift [e.g. on a VTec].
@R3k1355 I haven't noticed any difference in mid range or peak power. With the timing 'out' the car performed well through the rev range and the dephaser kicked in when expected. The problem was on idle and pick-up from idle where it seems the high MAP reading was leading to incorrect fuelling.
Thanks for that. Ya me too.
I'd imagine most garages would use an aftermarket tool as the Renault one is so expensive. Maybe they can get them to work, but it certainly didn't work for me. Before you do anything with injectors etc... you'll need to get the timing rechecked. Adjusting the...
Sorry for the radio silence... I didn't know anyone had posted on the thread, thought I'd set up alerts but they never arrived :(
OK, I bit the bullet and bought the proper Renault timing tool kit and set about redoing the timing on Thursday and Friday. It solved the problem. It's idling a...
If you want to experienced high performance for in/around £30K, forget everything you've seen on this thread so far. This thing will eat them all alive around a track https://racecarsdirect.com/Advert/Details/82963/dallara-f3024
Yes. Injectors are definitely another weak point on these engines. They slowly deteriorate, then fail. When one fails, the ECU issues an error code and switches it off, placing you on three cylinders. I bought my car with a failed injector which was an easy fix. There are two crude tests...
Ah OK... so with the locking pin in the correct hole on the crankshaft, the flywheel notch aligns with the second line on the bell-housing.
This is a massive help. Thanks again.
@flebay That's fantastic, thanks so much. Your Flickr gallery is on all the different stages of the process is amazing too.
So is that the flywheel notch below the green paint ? Also, should that notch line up with the mark on the bell housing that has the zero on it, which seems to be...
That's great @bloke Thanks so much ! I think my locking tool isn't good enough. I'm just trying to face up to the fact I probably need to spend £150 on the genuine Renault tool kit :( Mine's a Sealy and came with just two cogs, despite the fact it says it's for the F4R. The genuine Renault...
Andrew [Jinjur :)]... not sure of your name there. This is absolutely identical to my car. I looked at the ends of your camshafts and they look like they're out about the same as mine. The horseshoe will go into those groves but needs a little encouragement... which is what I gave it when I...
Thanks for the post on here J. Don't do anything on yours until we see how I get on. If it does prove to be timing, then I'll write something up so that it can appear prominently for everyone. I'm planning on doing the work towards the end of May. The car's driveable at the moment - as I'm...
Mine's a standard engine with very lumpy tick over - see thread below - and I appear to be reading around 500mB or so on idle. I'm resigning myself to the possibility that the timing may be off. Can you let me know what a reasonable figure for a road engine on idle should be ? Thanks...
It looks like I'm going to have to pull it apart and check the timing again :( I didn't realise there was a window on the bellhousing and timing marks there. I had been using that Renault manual PDF 3286a and there was no mention of it there. So there are four numbered timing marks on the...
Could you get the tool into the groves there ? Mine was a little closer than that but I had still to jiggle and force the tool to lodge it in the grooves. The reason I wasn't too perturbed about doing that was because I had to do that initially before I removed the original belt.
Regarding...
I know exactly what you mean about that other slot. I spent quite a while fiddling with that to be as sure as I could be that I had the crankpin in the slot and not one of the balance drillings. I had a screwdriver down the plughole to monitor TDC while I was doing it.
I'm getting that sickly...
An interesting article here from another site. This guy seems to point the finger at timing. It's something that's crossed my mind too, since I've just done the timing belt. However, in my defence, the cam timing tool slotted into its groves at the end of the camshafts, albeit with a...
That's interesting Nathan... and did it rev and pull OK ? In other words it was just problematic when idling ?
@LukeSi It had a set of Bosch double platinums in it before I did the big overhaul...and it was fine with them. I suppose I could try putting them back in to see if it makes a...
Just took the inlet manifold off and the leads and plug caps all look fine [see photo]
I'm just wondering about that seal on the underside of the manifold [see photos]. I took it out and it looks OK... it's flattened a bit but still proud off the aluminium. Not sure if that and/or the...
