Are you sure it doesn't show up on the desktop too? I turned auto import off in iphoto as it annoys me, and when I plug in the D40 it just comes up like a USB stick would. It's always done that though, Soph's does the same.

I'd suggest it's an iphoto thing, as mine's never done that (I never use iphoto)

I think he may be one of the purple helmets, which explains the picture really.

That's just how it is, once done using ACR it opens up like a normal picture and you can work on it further.
