I just stuck mine on manual and 1/60 or 1/80 with as wide as possible aperture and ISO800, then adjusted the exposure afterwards in PS to avoid the blurring. Could have gone higher ISO but IMO it' a big weakness of the D40.
Read the instructions, at least 3 times, and keep them with you whilst claying the car.
Put a towel down where you are working in case you drop the clay too.

They seem to get mixed reviews on the web. Take him along to Jessops, and let him have a play with all the cameras within that budget.
Personally, I think they look a bit better specced than a Nikon D40 which is of similarl price.
Ideally I need fast glass, possibly in macro guise. I might try the sigma 55-200mm @ 55mm next time. That way I can get f4 instead of f5.6 with the kit lens.

PB really does suck, if you must host pictures on there, set it to 1024x768, but resize the largest dimension to 1024px first in Photoshop. I load with all the methods on there and have never had a sizing problem, just a piss poor image quality...
