Get yourself some Autosmart G101, it's a multi-purpose degreaser. That'll clean them up nicely.
To protect the AST's, something like GT85 spray will do the job.
How come they mount in a different way?
The whiteline mounts to the lower shock bolt, whereas the Pure Motorsport one mounts to the beam swivel point.
Is the flex/roll not at the point of where the shock is?
Well I went for it and installed it on my Nexus 5.
A few little differences but nothing much and I can't say as I've noticed a better battery life yet.

If it's a standard car, the ecu will run the car richer as it thinks it is colder, to try and get it up to temp.
