I use Mobil 1 and Optimax .......and still see the cold startup problems! TBH I see the course running problems more after the car as been sat from warm after 3-4 hours (normally lunchtime) more so than staring from dead cold in the mornings!
I fitted the RSport ECU to Neil82cups Cup a while back. He reckons its got better bottom end torque and obviously revs to higher limits, which I reckon is probably in the trailing edge of the power band. PM Neil, but Im sure he feels that it didnt do much to rock his boat!
I find it seals the outside air quite well. great if you get stuck behind the smokey No:9 bus! Actually due to work recently, I havent had the 172 out of the garage for a few weeks, but ran the engine for a while in the garage to charge the battery (not recommended BTW) with the recirculation...
Try this wee experiment. Start up the car from cold, remain stationtionary, out of gear and hold it at about 2K revs and watch what happens when the temperature guage gets up to the 1st notch from the bottom. It suddenly "clears its throat" and suddenly revs higher and cleaner. This is thought...
Surely, it would be easier getting a Unichip as this keeps your standard ECU (to support all the 172 goodies + Reno diagnostics) .....plus.... the car is RR tuned specifically for your car ......and will support any future mods (eg. IK, zorst etc). The RSport is no better than an "average"...
Been there and had the seat runners on the 172 replaced .... solved ...lucky. But on the 1.6, two new seat runners and a seat frame .... still rattles .... know the driving whilst caressing the seat bolsters position well m8!!!
When I lowered the 172 by -40mm, I noticed that the braking changed .... like it lost its "bite". Reckon that the rears were providing more effort than normal. However the ABS didnt allow the rears to lock up. Fitted Eibachs with next to no drop ... improved handling but the excellent 172...
Paul ... off topic .... but what splitter have you got fitted (make/model)?
Incidently my cold air intake ...

Originally had -40mm AVO springs on my MK2 172. Looked really good and handled well on smooth roads but was sh*te out on the humpy/bumpy B roads. Felt like the fronts were bottoming out making the handling unstable. Changed to the Eibach Pro Kit .... next to nought drop but big improvements in...
Yep, I reckon so to a certain extent! Its all about min differentail temp between inlet and temp at the TB at the end of the day with enough volumetric flow IMHO.
Consider a Unichip, as this can be re-mapped later on if you do some more mods in the future. Also Unichips are RRd to match your car/mods unlike off the shelf chip mods that are programed for "average" tunes. Also if you take it to Reno your ECU/diagnostics still remain as standardas your ECU...
Its all about getting enough cold air to the inlet tracts of the engine. Even if you could reach 200 mph you would not reach a significant positive (boost) pressure. So IMHO pressurisation doesnt come into the equation at normal road speeds. If you have a larger inlet duct you will probably...
The inlet ducting I use is 75mm. About the max you can get up behind the 172 NS Xenon headlamp with the air valve thingy removed. You could possibly get a larger inlet diameter on the Cup with standard headlights.
Pretty much so. You can see the mark of the seal on the under-felt pad when you lift the bonnet. When idling you can just feel the air sucking in through the bottom air scoop. A "semi-sealed" system! BTW Ive fired a hose at the bottom duct while the wife had it on part throttle and the filter...
Had the same problem when I had -40mm AVOs and the CAT back Magnex on the MK2 172. Was fine when cold but when hot the exhaust expanded and started knocking on the rear beam under acceleration. There wasnt really an easy solution. So raised the car by fitting Eibach Pros. Handles better now even...
MarkC, done the temperature tests with a 24degC ambient over a range of driving speeds (30-80mph) and clocked up an average of 2 decC differential between ambient and temp at the air filter (you will see my temp sensor in the picture below). Dont think you will get much better than that from an...
Neil, take your car to R&A Coachworks Dunfermline and get them sprayed. They can take the side strips off so you will be able to use the car in between times. They do a top job there. I agree with you that the matt sidestips look gash. Will look the biz with a matching metallic base coat and...
Gibbo had this problem recently with his MK2 172. Turned out to be brake fluid loss right enough ........caused by a duff brake master cylinder. Potentially lethal situation if the warning lights were ignored! Trouble is that you cant see the brake fluid reservoir behind the engine top cover, so...
I had a couple of smallish dents on the 172 bonnet a few months back. If you can get behind them and its not behind the frame of the bonnet you will be in with a chance. Heat the area up a little with a hair drier and gently push it out with you finger/thumb so that its not so noticeable...
.... just I had a theory that if the car was ragged from delivery that gearboxes were suffering early .... but maybe not? Perhaps there are some sh*te new boxes fitted new! My 172 always has a notchy change from 1st to 2nd when cold. That was run in properly too.
21 miles on the clock ....... and I thought I was sad with 3.5K after a year (GR mode)!!! That car looks the biz ...... youre a lucky guy to see the No.1 and drive it
And here they are guys & gals .......
