As the first year with the 182 comes to a close I have found myself summarising the experience so far and what might come next.
This year focused on maintenance and learning how the car handles. Luckily I started off with a nearly standard car (lowered on Cooksports and fitted with a Whiteline...
You can also use the dCi rear frame - I did this once. Problem was, I could never get the ABS working, and with it off the braking distribution went 50:50, gave me some frightful moments...
But maybe there is someone out there who managed to get the ABS working, or you might be able to delete it!
If done properly and the car itself was otherwise in good nick, I would buy an LY car if the base was BG (you can get away with not respraying the engine bay etc as black is neutral).
By done properly I mean the car would have been stripped down and rust checked / proofed, any dents sorted etc...
The funds I had set aside for this job went into one of my other cars and so this got postponed until later in the year.
I'm based in Royston and plan to give these guys a ring closer to the time - http://www.gandbautospray.co.uk/ (sadly I know nothing about them, so not sure if they're good /...
Soundbars and small speakers like Sonos are great, compact and easy to setup / keep out of the way.
If you are considering this option vs a dedicated 5.1+ system, chances are you won't care too much either way.
That said, a dedicated speaker set is incomparably better than any of those...
I've beaten quite a few people in the Clio, amazing what you can do in such a small car!
I particularly like how you can fit almost anyone you beat in a Clio in the boot, sometimes I can even stuff two of them in there!
Completely agree, but to the average Joe public you can see why it's hard to stomach that if the car itself is worth a significant amount of that yearly outlay.
To put into perspective, you can run a Porsche of similar vintage for less than 2k per year.
To the enthusiast however, it is what it...
As I wrote elsewhere, I bought a low mileage / owners example with plenty of recent history including cambelt etc., from an enthusiast, and still within the first 4 months I spent £1.5k on it as it needed an alternator, gearbox and PAS were leaking, wheel arch covers needed replacing and many...
I have on and off considered what the op is thinking of, for me though turbo is not something I would consider and a supercharger would get rid of aircon which is also not an option.
The NA route won't add much power but would change the character and I suppose breathe in a bit of fun. But then...
I find it tough to give advice on something so personal, but I think these cars standard are great (fun) on track and the money most mods cost can go a long way in consumables and general maintenance.
When you're going to or coming back from the track, and generally going for a hoon on country...
Any recommendations for a body shop in the Cambridge area, looking to:
- Get the car checked for rust spots
- Clean and coat/waxoyl as needed
- Small dent repairs
- Respray front bumper (possibly more, depending on other work done)
Is all of the above a single type of business or would I be...
As above these cars are surprisingly cheap to run, if you get a decent standard one, look after it and either keep standard or reverse back to standard when you decide move it on, you would have lost very little money.
This is possible because the market has been kind to the 1*2 and good...
I know finance is a touchy and very personal subject, but if you're only keeping it for a while then why buy in cash at all?
It will probably work out cheaper overall to lease the R8 and hand it back, then maybe buy the RS6 in cash if you plan on keeping it a few years?
I swapped to a 1.6 K4M on an mk2 Clio 2 and stupidly got the wiring loom for the mk1 Clio 2 thinking "surely can't be that different", boy was I wrong. I managed to get hold of the full electrical manuals for the Clio 2 and with lots of time and patience I eventually managed to convert the loom...
I've been following 1*2 prices since early 2020 and it seems that:
- Non runners / no history / no belts are firmly over 1k, not much difference in price but fewer being sold at this price point
- Average condition / miles / owners has shot up quite a bit to around 3k
- Cars that look good on...
This project thread is giving me too many excuses to spend money 😅 Mods are very subjective but to my eye your car is the "best of" collection!
Also amazing effort in documenting this stuff, I seemingly can never be bothered to stop and take pictures along the way.
If I lose my restraint later...
Even as you go up in price it seems there is always something waiting for you to spend money on.
I paid even more than the above poster for a low miles car that had lots of brand new stuff put in by the previous owner, but my alternator went and I went chasing for other things to refresh and...
Surely mentioned earlier in this thread, savagegeese is arguably the best channel out there right now, so good even the SUV reviews are worth watching.
I didn't care for Youtube until 2 months ago so got lots to catch up on!
Thanks for this, loved that build and pretty much where I'm headed. If only I was as handy as you lot to do so much of the mechanical work myself, I'll always have to rely a lot on specialists. But then again I'd rather spend the time doing my day job and the spare time driving the thing!
The...
I both wanted a car that didn't break the bank to use regularly on track, and really wanted that car to be a 182 - long story for another post!
So off I went to the classifieds, looking at the low-mid price range and saving myself some extra money for any immediate maintenance and those coveted...
Can completely relate with this!
I reckon 1*2s in the hands of people with shoestring budgets are dwindling (cars now well past that age where they need constant work done), and perhaps moving to people with disposable income / other cars and have no issue paying more for good examples. Happens...
Echoing the above, looks a million times better with those wheels!
My OCD could not cope with the 996-style badge being too high up the bootlid even though "Carrera" is my favourite script. I went "temporarily" de-badge and never stuck it back on.
How are you finding it overall?
