So since the start of this thread I've been looking at 911s, didn't realise how affordable 996s are.

I have seen one nice one local to me but it has xenons of some sort, which normally would be a good thing but it has the most god awful chrome covers on the washers on the lamp units, is this standard?

What's the deal with keeping these on the road too? I'd not want to garage it if I did get one, do they have rust issues etc?

Should've seen how affordable they were before 2016/17!

Amber all day long tbh
5 spokes and clears for me. Clean classy look.

Working from home has its perks. Lunch break wheel swappage happened.

1000% better, even with the ambers.
Ambers make it and you know it.
Yes yes yes

Looks bang on now, liking the Ambers

Inside not so much but meh
👠
That looks awesome! Just how Porsche intended. The old wheels were nice but those are something else!!
Yeah it does help that these have the correct sized tyre as well. When ive cleaned it it'll look even better!
Yes! That’s how it’s done.

PS - Like the stone and windows on your house 👍
Cheers, windows and doors are pretty shoddy quality and the company who makes them went out of business just about the time our houses were completed. Luckily we are renting so not our problem but a constant pain in the arse for the Palace lol

What are the running costs of these gen 911s? Service costs / consumable replacement costs etc?

Say, if it needs a new radiator or clutch, will you need to take out a persona loan? 😂

Someone I work with had an old 911 and it needed something (could have been a radiator) and it was something like £7,000 🙈

Echoing the above, looks a million times better with those wheels!

My OCD could not cope with the 996-style badge being too high up the bootlid even though "Carrera" is my favourite script. I went "temporarily" de-badge and never stuck it back on.

How are you finding it overall?

Part prices are shockingly cheap from Porsche, but you obviously need a dealer nearby to make it worth it. Servicing costs at Porsche are a joke, the independents are so much better!

Because of where the engine is, and because its a flat 6, a lot of jobs are surprisingly easy as well. These cars are designed to do the mileage as long as they're looked after.

Overall I love it, havent had a chance to use it enough yet though!

There’s not actually many cars I’d rather have than an old 911 right now. I’d love to find a hartech rebuilt 997 2s.

Is the exhaust standard youth?

Agree with all of the above.

Wheels and ambers make it look bloody lovely!
I wanna see ambers on that cossie of yours.

I think people over egg the engine issues in porsches a lot, but even id be wary of an early 997. That said, I’ve always maintained that if I’d buy an RX8, I’d go for one that needed an engine rebuild and get it done myself (therefore have a lot more confidence in it being done properly) rather than buy one that’s already had it done. I think I’d say the same for a 997. Buy one cheap, that has obvious bore score. Rebuild. I did try doing it on the 996 but the guy wanted too much.

The exhaust is a stainless system, unsure of brand. Receipt/diary entry would suggest it’s a bit of a custom jobby. Sounds fantastic!

What kind of money is required for the engine work? I thought it would be monumentally expensive.

A 996 Gen2 GT3 is on my top 3 to own one day but i have to admit since you have taken off both the facelift lights and Gen1 GT3 wheels it looks a lot better.

The think with engine rebuilds is most of the parts you will buy are after market.

Had a quick google and a set of forged pistons is £800-£950 depending on the size and spec. Consider a set of forged pistons for the engines in most used to (classic mini A series) are £550 and there are only 4 of them it doesn’t seem too bad.

Engine machine work won’t change in price with the model of the car. Over bore costs are the same on any engine.

I changed the front discs and pads on mine myself for pagid items and they cost around £260 inc fitting kit and wear sensors. It cost me £140 to have the rubber boots on one of the front drive shaftS replaced. Also managed to get a set of four MPS4S Fitted for £750 which I didn’t think was too bad.

an Indy that’s associated with the dealer I bought mine from charge £129 for a minor service and £319 for a major one (that’s for a gen 1 997 C4S.

on the other hand I took mine in to a local Indy for a water leak near the engine fixing and he said if it’s the cross over coolant pipes it’s an engine out job 😂, luckily for me it wasn’t.

currently mine has one of the valves on the sports exhaust not working, to replace the back box that the valve is on would cost £1200 from Porsche (thats just one side).

See hartech for rebuild prices

Looks class.

Your street looks very pleasant.
Will look better in a few weeks when the V70R lands from 🇯🇵

How can you hate Porsche’s! Did one come on to your mrs?

Common, I don’t like the driving position or seats and I don’t like the styling. Every time there has been a Porsche option open to me, there’s been a different car that I far prefer.

All my speakers were buzzing in the car so removed a dash one to have a look.

Yep, that’s dead.

It’s not easy to change these. Ended up messaging a guy on eBay who used to make adapters, turns out he’s been tweaking his design and I have to say I’m impressed with it. Either way the fronts are sorted.

Ive ordered some beefier ones for the rear, there are some packaging constraints up front. Just waiting on those arriving and I can listen to music without being annoyed!

Love a nice 996! Been eyeing up C4S’s for a few years now.

Need to get one bought before they appreciate out of reach.

Very nice.
I recently sold my early 3.4 C2, ace car.
I didn’t love the handling to start with. A number of well respected independents shrugged their shoulders, saying it needed new shocks, springs, all arms and so on, for about £3k all up.
Took it to Center Gravity in the Midlands, who specialise in Porsche suspension and geo.
They carry out a robust assessment and provide proposals (usually offer a New Year deal in Jan).
I can’t recommend them highly enough, saved me a load of money (shocks and springs were acceptable, changed an arm here a bush there), handled superbly.

Thanks for this! I’ve been told that these can suffer from going out of alignment as well, mine needs new tyres as these are a bit old for my liking. Hoping that helps my confidence, that and an alignment anyway. Having said that I am getting quicker with it...

Had it’s first wash today. Love love LOVE it Now. Interior was grubby as hell and filled with the previous owners bogeys and dog fur. Happy to say it’ll now be full of my own nasal matter, and my own dogs muddy prints and fuzz.

Really impressed with the performance of these cars, not sure if my mate’s one is a ‘good one’ but it seems pretty rapid. Or maybe I’ve just been driving my clio too long! (not even had my sti out since Jan)

Had a longer run out in it the other day. Seems so strong and urgent as you press the throttle and as it revs really well, at 5krpm it starts to pull even harder. As a passenger it feels a quicker car than the bhp numbers suggest. It does have a dansk exhaust (and sounds lovely) but we both wonder (he’s got a couple of other 911’s) if it was chipped too. Not sure what difference an exh and chip makes on these?

I describe it as a big Clio as they feel very square and squat, they dont move if they arent revved out, and pull hard to the red line, and handle on rails, but arent particularly quick.

I've just hopped out of a 400bhp M2 Comp into this, and it certainly doesnt feel slow. It actually masks speed well, I often look down and think "woops, going a bit fast here". But Im also "daily" driving a 182 at the moment, which always feels like youre doing twice the speed you are!

Mine is the lightest 996 you can buy, and it really does feel light. I think the anolgy of it being like a Clio is quite good, everything is very immediate. Im not sure how the electronic throttle feels, but the cable one in mine is obviously very responsive. Remember whilst 300bhp can be had in a Golf nowadays, theres more going on here. A Golf R is fast, but the 996 is about 200kg lighter than a Golf, and makes its power without the need for turbos. I also think it feels a lot more raw, and you sit a lot lower. This all adds to thinking that it feels super quick for what is "only" 300.

The whole car doesnt feel a league above my Boxster S, it feels about 2 or 3 leagues above. Its night and day. Considering from the seats forward, they're essentially the same car, thats really surprised me.

His definitely feels rapid from the passenger seat, mind you it was fresh/damp air Friday. I’d be interested in going in another 996 to see. I’ve only ever driven 964/993 C2’s other than this but this feels much better to me. They do seem to do 320bhp with exh, filter and remap (allegedly) which I’d say is more like it going off my butt dyno and his other cars (20’odd similar cars)
