Oh! come on Guys, perhaps its not for the purists but as the o/p said, he has insurance issues to deal with. Don't just put him off without explaining the problems properly.
Its not my thing Rory, but the various look-a-likes that get mentioned on here are sometimes less than "convincing"...
You still need to charge the cars battery up, and also try to find out why it went flat in the first place.
Remember, the alarm will still work if the cars battery is flat as it has its own battery, but the remote locking wont as thats driven by the cars battery.

Anyone notice this one ...
If it was a short, you wouldn't get anything out of the speaker, try moving the balance and fader so only one speaker plays at a time, that should give you a clue if its a short.
Thats what happens, its like a fuse really, too much current and "pop"
You could hear the mid range if only wires were connected, its the cone that produces the low frequency.
Take the grille or cover off, and gently push the speaker cone back.
If its feels rough and sticks, you have burnt the voice coil and its cattle trucked.
its really difficult to diagnose something like this remotely.
what i would do, is pull it off and give it a really good clean and check for wear or rips.
Make sure when you put it back on, that it pushes right on to the metal lip.
you might be lucky.
also have a look on the mating...
Before you panic and thrash the cash for a new door seal.
Have a close look and see if there is a small hole in the soft part of the rubber.
Some cars have them to let the water out, and they can get blocked.
The other thing to check, is.
Is the water getting at the top somewhere and...
Chris, I hope you have a fuse at both ends of the cable.
I would personally never clip anything to the brake lines, what happens if it rubs through, plus if something shorted the power cable out onto you brake pipes, how do you stop a car thats on fire ???? Well dodgy.......sorry.:(
