If it was a short, you wouldn't get anything out of the speaker, try moving the balance and fader so only one speaker plays at a time, that should give you a clue if its a short.

Thats what happens, its like a fuse really, too much current and "pop" You could hear the mid range if only wires were connected, its the cone that produces the low frequency.

Take the grille or cover off, and gently push the speaker cone back. If its feels rough and sticks, you have burnt the voice coil and its cattle trucked.

Chris, I hope you have a fuse at both ends of the cable. I would personally never clip anything to the brake lines, what happens if it rubs through, plus if something shorted the power cable out onto you brake pipes, how do you stop a car thats on fire ???? Well dodgy.......sorry.:(
