some phase 1's are F4R730 some are F4R732 if you look at the front of the engine to the right of the oil filter their is a silver plaque that tells you the engine code.
Hi Bill, the rears wear faster as they take a lot of load when cornering, they are also thinner than the fronts.

box oil isnt renewed, the box is checked for leaks, depends on the mechanic and his experience on the car. i change my box oil every 10k keeps my box nice and tight :clown:
The leak will be the heater matrix, it is a dash out job.

My guess without looking is there is no oil or very low oil in it - you'll need to check if the casing has any holes - also the driveshaft boot may have split letting all the oil spew out, if its the drive shaft boot or a hole in the casing thats not at the bottom of the box then there will...
Gearbox oil smells- how much are we talking about a few drops?
I would say the selector arm ( the bit that goes from the gearstick to the box) may be bent or needs adjusting.
Failing that - do you notice a whine from the box when going along do the gears crunch when selecting them?
