Gearbox

The sorry saga started last week, went to reverse but for some reason I could not get reverse gear at all. Ended up me pushing the car backwards myself, anyway hopped back in and went for 1st but it didnt work either:S It really was like someone stole them out of my gearbox.
This continued for around 6 days with me doing 2nd gear granny starts but for some STRANGE reason the 2 missing gears started to gradually work again better than ever.

Just noticed yesterday I started to get black puddles of oil left behind any where I had parked so I decided to have a look underneath where I seen an unhealthy amount of oil covering what I think is the gearbox. Just keeps dripping away, this black/ brown oil which is sort of wattery and doesnt smell.

Im headin to a garage tommorow hopefully for them to look at it but does anyone know what price I will be gettin thrown at me for:

A: New Gearbox inc fitting
B: Repairing Gearbox (If it can, and if it is the problem)
C: Going to a Scrapper for a Gearbox

As well as that, when looking under the car I suddenly realised "where the **** is the under tray" that was here when I was checking the car before its service. Im convinced Renault forgot to put it back on but does anyone know how much a new one will set me back?

Gearbox oil smells- how much are we talking about a few drops?
I would say the selector arm ( the bit that goes from the gearstick to the box) may be bent or needs adjusting.
Failing that - do you notice a whine from the box when going along do the gears crunch when selecting them?

Now that you mention it, there is a whine when I accelerate and revs go to around 3,000 you here a loudish whine like its the fly wheel spinnin around.

There is quite a bit comming out, your talking a puddle bigger than a dinner plate. Im just waiting for the thing to seize and a £1000 bill

Now that 1st and Reverse have come back the Gearbox has never worked better, really smooth and easy to get into any gear now. Use to be really notchy, was like sturin a pot of glue it was that bad.

My guess without looking is there is no oil or very low oil in it - you'll need to check if the casing has any holes - also the driveshaft boot may have split letting all the oil spew out, if its the drive shaft boot or a hole in the casing thats not at the bottom of the box then there will still be a little bit of oil in it.

Thanks for the advice, espically so late on. Once its up on the ramps tommorow Ill be having a good hoak around it. Have a small bucket under it now collecting the oil. Bit of a stupid question but what is the drive shaft boot?

My clio is falling apart on me, parts missing and others breaking. Its unreal.

PS: You have any idea how much a new under tray will set me back at all inc the fitting.
