Bought one of those Makita knock-offs the other day. Pile of crap. I'm very happy with the Makita LXT stuff and have a lot of it now. Tempted to go Milwaukee for their 12v stuff as their battery packs and tools are better form factor than Makita for that size stuff.

I managed to get mine to crunch in 3rd when the box possibly wasn't quite fully warmed up by rushing into gear. I did it again by shifting into 2nd and then back to 3rd quickly to confirm. However trying the same action again later when fully warmed didn't seem to get it to crunch. Like the OP...

Is it just the syncros that fail or is it a bit more than that? Wondering if its still possible to double-declutch into gears when you've lost one.

This happened the other week. This happened last week. Current (best) thoughts is the aux belt slipping and/or tensioner seized. Ordered a new genuine belt and tensioner from Kam Racing. Hopefully it is the belt and not the PAS pump failing... Will now need to figure out how to change it...
