The big thing that no-one's mentioned is that a 'modified 1.2 with a 182 conversion' will cost you more to insure than a 182 anyway!!
FFS decent ph2 172's can be had for under £500 more!!
Avoid!
My mods tend to be returning a rotter to its former glory! Undoing the labours of wannabe Westwoods, if you will.
If I keep a car, I like to make my mods subtle - things that improve upon possible budgetary constraints of the manufacturer (stainless exhaust, port/ polish, stainless fastenings...
Seriously, be careful about this 'copying' lark! Patents and IP could be compromised if you're not careful!
Just in case anyone's watching this thread... :nono: :S
I'd have one though!
I am, but that's beside the point.
Let's keep this civil.
I was merely illustrating some facts. Call it an education and a favour to stop you looking silly in the future.
For reference: The R6 is a typical - not that fast - 600cc sports bike.
Sports bikes tend to come in a few variants...
My comparisons between a 172 and a 172 Cup favoured the Cup. That's because I want a track car. Your opinion will probably be different due to your intended usage.
As someone else said: It's all subjective.
To the member who raced a bike and 'won' - My 2001 R6 would eat a clio even with 2...
That's the thing. It's a lottery with second-hand cars. I think you just have to go in with your eyes open and be as educated as possible on the things to look for when viewing.
It's encoaraging to hear everyone's experiences though! :D
Intriguing answers guys! Thanks! Pretty much as I expected. The 'core' car seems to be solid, but the peripheral components seem to be gash, yes?
What's a UCH, Ads?
My gut instinct is to steer clear of cars over 80k, just on the basis of wear and tear. I'd also avoid excessive under-use too...
Ain't that the truth. :dead:
All down to badly designed/ badly cast water cooling channels in the block. Heads are prone to warping because of the terribly-designed thermostat system that allows cold water to gush into a hot block. Also, heads become porous for some reason unknown to me...
Love the E30!
For 8k an S2000 is a good car (here's my old one):
But they're expensive if they go wrong. Suspension is brittle and a few on the S2k Owners Club have had engines go pop after 100k miles. Personally, I'd avoid it.
If it's RWD you want, for 8k you can get a pretty nice example...
I'm considering a 172 or a 172 Cup as a fun commuter/ track day car.
I'm also aware that there are some components on which Renault made budgetary compromises (exhaust?).
Now I realise there are the odd 'lemons' from any manufacturer, but are 172's more likely to need serious work when other...
+1
Next to gutting it - which you already mentioned starting, you're never really going to improve performance. Back seats, carpets, interior trim - they all weigh a surprising amount. Get them out at the expense of creature comforts.
After this, the most you can do would be to lose weight...
Entirely my philosophy. It's been sullied by some scrote so it has to go.
I was a mug - I sold it on a Bank Holiday and took a banker's draft. It was an exceptional fake and I cancelled my insurance the day before the bank sent the draft back. Eurgh. Won't make that mistake again. The police...
TBH, I'm not looking to spend Trophy money right now - I had the Elise for track work until it was stolen, damaged and stripped (now recovered, but still in a mess) - so whilst I repair that, I still want to be doing a few TD's this year. It really has to be a Ph 2 172 variant IMO.
Also, after...
Ph2 - 172 or 172 cup - both from say, 2003.
My thoughts are that the Cup will. No real justifiction for that, other than (maybe) less were made? - Just uninformed speculation...
I realise that the current financial climate isn't ideal for used car sales, but I'm looking at the mid-long term...
